Why I Became a Defense Attorney. Three reasons:  To help people in trouble; to protect individual rights; and to defend the Constitution.. I grew up watching my mother help people when they most needed it and I know it made a deep impression on me.  I learned so much from watching her.  Most importantly, she taught me to “meet people where they are” and see what you could offer of yourself to help them.  She was the best counselor and mediator you’d ever meet and I strive in my own career to be half as good as she was in her career.  She is gone now but I know that I carry her spirit with me whenever I am actively engaged in helping someone in crisis.. I also grew up as a Navy junior and that, too, made a deep impression on me.  My father was a distinguished Naval Officer who flew jets during the Vietnam War.  He risked his life to defend our way of life and the Constitution.  He knew that if there weren’t citizens who were willing to stand up and fight on behalf of all of us we could lose everything.  I am proud to say that I have followed in my father’s footsteps in defending our rights and the Constitution; I have just done it in a different way.. Very early on in my career, I saw how easily all of our rights can be eroded if there aren’t lawyers out there fighting to protect the rights of all who are accused – the guilty and the innocent.  If we don’t demand that the promises of the Constitution are delivered, we lose them.  The burden to prove guilt is on the government not on the defendant.  The Constitution demands that we view people accused of crime as innocent unless and until they are proven guilty.  And guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.  These are amazing concepts that separate our country and our laws from the rest of the world.  We lose them if we don’t fight for them.. At the core, these are the reasons that I chose to become a defense attorney.

Renee Berard has lived in Loudoun County, Virginia for over 30 years and is a proud alumna of Loudoun Valley High School.  Renee went on to graduate magna cum laude from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.  After college, Renee graduated cum laude from Tulane University Law School in 2009.. While attending law school, Renee was awarded an internship with the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She had the honor and pleasure of working for Chief Judge Graham C. Mullen.  During this experience, Renee was able to participate in trials, sentencing and naturalization ceremonies.  She also gained experience researching and drafting orders that were before the court.. Following her federal judicial internship, Renee had the opportunity to study in The Netherlands.  Her coursework included classes in advocacy in the fields of International Human Rights, International Criminal Tribunals, International Law and the Death Penalty, International Women's Rights and Terrorism.. Subsequent to her international curriculum, Renee worked as a summer associate for Heller Ehrman, a global law firm in New York City.  Her experience and training focused on civil rights litigation, employment discrimination, patents, international arbitration agreements, and corporate litigation management.. Ms. King graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law and has been practicing law since 2005.  Ms. King worked in the Loudoun County Office of the Public Defender for approximately seven years where she gained valuable trial experience.  As an Assistant Public Defender, Ms. King represented clients in all types of criminal matters ranging from traffic offenses to larcenies, drug possessions, fraud, rape, and murder.  Ms. King has served as a member of the Bench Bar Committee for the Loudoun General District Court as well as a member of the Loudoun County Bar Association.. Prior to her tenure in the Public Defender's Office, Ms. King worked as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Buckingham County, VA where she prosecuted both misdemeanor and felony cases.  This opportunity allowed Ms. King to see both sides of the courtroom and gain a better overall perspective of the criminal justice system.. Ms. King was born and raised in Fairfax County. Ms. King attended the College of William and Mary where she received her Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a minor in Sociology. She then went on to receive her juris doctor from University of Virginia School of Law in 2005. While at the UVA Law, Ms. King participated in moot court and served on the editorial board for the Virginia Environmental Law Journal.  Ms. King participated in the Prosecution Clinic offered through the law school and worked for Professor Paul Mahoney, who is currently the Dean of UVA Law. During law school, Ms. King also clerked at Venable LLP located in Washington, D.C..
