Throughout my childhood, I had many different ideas of what I wanted to be when I grew up.  The one common theme was people-I always wanted to be working with people.  Both estate planning and family law have allowed me to prusue my goal of working with people.  My clients are all real people and families, not corporations and businesses.  It is a tremendous responsibility being entrusted with advising my clients regrading their familial and financial issues, but one that I enjoy doing.  Family and finances are of the utmost importnance to me, and I take my clients' very seriously as well.

The Lowcountry Law Office on Aging, Mental Health & Disabilities, LLC focuses exclusively on the representation of seniors, individuals struggling with mental illnesses, physical disabilities and their families.  We assist clients with the preparation of wills, powers of attorney, living wills, as well as revocable (living) trusts and irrevocable trusts for Medicaid, Life Insurance, and Special Needs planning.. Originally from Binghamton, New York, Rob attended the University of Notre Dame, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He then headed south for the warmer climate of Chapel Hill and law school at the University of North Carolina. Before starting his law practice, he served as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and as a Vice President and Regional Trust Officer with Southern National Bank. He was admitted to the practice of law in South Carolina in 1979. He received a degree from Northwestern University Graduate School of Trusts in 1984. He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and resides in Mt. Pleasant with his wife Kathy.

After graduating law school, Mr. Futeral was the judicial clerk for the Honorable C. Tolbert Goolsby, Jr., Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals. Thereafter, he practiced law in Columbia, South Carolina for several years until returning to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Futeral is a partner in the law firm of Futeral & Nelson, LLC and has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Charleston School of Law. He has written articles for the South Carolina Lawyer magazine and the American Bar Association Magazine. Further, he has published a legal annotation regarding the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act in South Carolina Jurisprudence. He has been an instructor for the South Carolina Mandatory Magistrate's School and, in 1997, taught the paralegal certification program in Charleston sponsored by the University of South Carolina. Mr. Futeral frequently lectures to non-lawyers and attorneys on such topics as personal injury practice and employment law.

In addition to practicing law, I was elected to serve on the Board of Governors for the  South Carolina association of Justice ("SCAJ").  I've also taught Criminal Law and Evidence at one of the local colleges.  Outside of work, my interests include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and just about anything outdoors. I played tennis in college, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, competed in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon several times, and backpacked into some of the most rugged and remote terrain in the mountains of Idaho to bowhunt elk.  I also enjoy coaching my son's basketball and lacrosse team.  In the summer you will usually find me with my wife and son at the beach or out in the boat.  I work to live, not live to work!
