When I began to practice law in 1972 I never expected that the focus of my work would be the area of Domestic Relations. Time and many satisfied clients have proved this to be my area of concentration. While this is a very difficult time for most clients, we do our best to help them through this process in a positive way. Sometimes the best advice we can provide is an honest and complete appraisal of the client's situation. Promising unrealistic results or encouraging wasteful and spiteful litigation is not consistent with our firm philosophy. While marriages may end, families continue. We do not serve our clients if at the same time we injure their family.. Twenty years ago, with the help of two mental health professionals, I began a comprehensive divorce mediation business. Like many good ideas, the time was not right, and people were afraid of this new and unfamiliar process for resolving disputes.. Twenty years have passed and the time is now right. I have been providing mediation services to parties and their lawyers for the past two years. Approximately 1/3 of my practice now consists of mediation and arbitration services. The ability of parties and their attorneys to reach resolution when properly facilitated is astounding. More than 95% of the matters which have been submitted to me for mediation have resulted in the parties reaching an agreement which addresses their needs and interests.. In consultation with the parties? attorneys, I am able to design a process which will promote the likelihood of resolution. This process can be facilitative or evaluative or a combination of each. The goal is to encourage the parties to explore alternatives that allow them to successfully achieve their goals.. The mediation process allows for candor and creativity in an interest focused environment which provides safety and confidentiality. There is every reason to believe spouses can assist one another in achieving their goals if, at the same time, they are able to achieve their own goals.

My legal career began in 1984 in the areas of general practice and litigation.  Through the years my interest, energy and skills have led me to concentrate on family law which is now my sole area of practice.  Since 2001 I have been a member of the Collaborative Family Law Council of Wisconsin and can offer the collaborative divorce process to my clients. I also offer services as a mediator, an arbitrator,  a special master and Guardian ad Litem.. I believe that as a family lawyer it is my role to guide people through what is one of the most traumatic and stressful times of their life.  I work hard to maintain stability and consistency for the children when they are separated into two households.    I listen to my clients and advise them on what the law is while giving them options so they may assess for themselves the impact of their decisions on their future and their family.

My first trial after graduating law school was a homicide case and we achieved a not guilty verdict. Since then, our firm has achieved innumerable dismissials and acquittals. We have won cases that seem unwinable. We have won cases when clients have confessed to crimes. In one very remarkable case, one of our clients confessed to a crime and pleaded guilty with another lawyer. After coming to us for a second opinion we were able to withdraw his guilty plea, go to trial, and convince a jury of his innocence despite the fact that he confessed his guilt to the police.. We have won every type of case you could imagine. Many of our wins occur even before charges are issued - countless times we are hired immediately after a client is arrested and we are often able to convince prosecutors to drop or reduce the case before charges are ever issued. When we can't beat the case, we are usually able to negotiate a favorable settlement. Myself, and my team, work tirelessly to protect your rights. By way of more information, I became interested in law as a child.  My grandfather  nurtured my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. He pointed me to the legal profession, which he said presented the greatest opportunity to apply hard work, integrity and compassion to people in need. Over the years of practicing law, I have found that to be true on a daily basis. In this profession, we see both the best and worst of things that life can bring, and I strive to truly listen to my clients, to be empathetic to them, and to educate them about options and consequences. I believe being an advocate is one of the greatest privileges there is, and I am very honored to navigate my clients through difficult and very important times in their lives.. I started practicing law in 2000, litigating contract and complex tort cases in State and Federal trial and appellate courts. I most enjoyed working with children and families and their legal needs, so in 2009, I opened my own private practice to focus on three areas of the law: family matters (divorce, legal separation, paternity, post-judgment matters and the collaborative process); estate planning (wills, trusts, and incapacitation planning); and business law (business formation, contract creation and litigation of disputes). When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three children and staying active by volunteering in school, extracurricular activities and other community organizations. My oldest daughter, Abby, was born with hearing loss, and I am fortunate to work with some of the organizations that have helped us along the way. Abby has made me fully appreciate that challenges are opportunities to become more than what we are and to move outside of ourselves to help others.. I was a Burke Scholar at Marquette University, whereby I was able to volunteer hundreds of hours each school year in Southeastern Wisconsin communities (in healthcare, community centers, children's organizations, hunger/homelessness groups, churches, jails, justice centers, etc.).  I graduated magna cum laude with a double major in writing-intensive English and in History. I was fortunate to be named Marquette University’s College of Arts and Sciences’ Outstanding Senior and the Association of Marquette University Women’s Senior Women Ignation Leader. I was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Sigma Nu and Sigma Tau Delta Honor Societies.. My law degree is from Marquette University Law School, where I was a law scholar and where I was awarded CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in Business Law, Elder Law and Juvenile Law.. I have been fortunate to become a member of the Collaborative Family Law Council of Wisconsin, the Society of Family Lawyers and the Waukesha Bar Association, and I continue to volunteer as much as I can, including with the Women’s Center in Waukesha, the Christmas Clearing Council, SC Waukesha, the Legal Aid Society, Rose Glen PTO, and the school district (I am a representative of the Waukesha Superintendent Advisory Council).. Colin is a graduate of Marquette University Law School, and is a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association as well as the Dane County Bar Association. He practices law in Southeastern Wisconsin, handling family law matters such as child support, divorce, custody, placement, and visitation.. Colin was recently married and lives outside Madison with his wife, where they met as freshmen in the dorms while attending UW-Madison. Colin is an avid hockey player, and roots for the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of his family is from Canada. He also enjoys golfing, watching football (Go Pack Go!), reading, and travelling, especially to Nova Scotia, Canada.
