The first step in successfully representing a person is attempting to step into their shoes and empathizing with their issue.  My goal upon my first meeting with a client is that by the time they step out my door they feel they have been listened to, that their issue is now in competent hands, and that the stress they have been dealing with is alleviated. I strive to work cooperatively with my clients while we work together to obtain justice. I take my client's issues personally, and represent them as I would want to be represented.. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife, two kids, and two dogs. I volunteer as a youth sports coach and love playing guitar. Prior to law school I spent two years with the United States Peace Corps in Kazakhstan.  The experience left me with a love of service and renewed respect for our system of law.

In 2000, I began my law career as a defense attorney working for numerous insurance companies. In this position, I gained extensive trial experience. After suffering a significant injury in 2001 that resulted in 3 years of litigation, I knew I wanted to help others. I knew the support they would need. I also knew that I wanted to provide a personalized experience for each and every case. I wanted to fight just as hard for them as someone had fought for me. Since opening my firm in 2006, I have been a passionate, aggressive advocate for victims of negligence.. I purchased the building that you will visit in downtown Olympia. It was once a house that I converted into office space. My goal was to create a space for victims that feels safe and welcoming, rather than place the firm in a traditional office setting. My goal was to create a space that feels like home for our clients.. I truly love what I do. I love all of the relationships I have developed with my clients over the years. My clients are truly like family to me.

I have been practicing law in the South Puget Sound since 1990.  I am a Puget Sound native and graduated from Washington State University in 1984.. I am currently a member of the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ), have served as a chair of the WSAJ Thurston County Roundtable, and have been an Eagle member of WSAJ for many years.. I am a member of the Washington State Bar Association, and the Thurston and Pierce County Bar Associations.   I am currently serving on the Thurston County Bar Association Board of Directors.  I am contributing author to the Washington State Bar Association publication Washington Civil Trial and Evidence Manual, Voir Dire to Verdict (Fifth Edition, 2004).. In addition to being an advocate for injured people, I am also active in local civil courts as an arbitrator and mediator, and am regularly selected as an arbitrator to perform mandatory arbitrations in Thurston County Superior Court.  I have also served as a Judge Pro-Tem and Settlement Conference Judge for Thurston County District Court.

I am an Olympia native and Capital High School graduate.  I have practiced law in Olympia since graduating from Lewis and Clark law school in 1996.  In law school, I focused on land use, environmental, real property and contract law.. I am also Vice-President of the Board for Harlequin Productions and have been a volunteer and sometime assistant coach for the Capital High School speech and debate team.. My work team includes my principal land use paralegal, Doreen Milward, who was trained in land use by Sandy Mackie, of Owens Davies Mackie, who was the premier land use attorney in southwest Washington until departure from the firm.

I am a dog-loving transplant from California who absolutely adores the Pacific Northwest!  I moved to Olympia in 2004 to marry my law-school sweetheart who was a partner in a law firm in Olympia.. I graduated magna cum laude and phi beta kappa, from Wellesley College with a B.A. in Geology and received her J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School (formerly Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College). I am an active member of the Washington State Bar, and an inactive member of the California State Bar.. I have significant commercial and bankruptcy experience. I spent two years as an office manager/firm administrator at a small law firm and more than two years as a vendor contract manager for Western Institutional Review Board, Inc.. I spent the year and a half after I passed the bar in Washington State as an attorney/law clerk for a Chapter 7 trustee where I learned about a wide variety of bankruptcy matters.  In June 2017, I opened Deschutes Law Group in order to assist small businesses and personal clients with commercial and bankruptcy matters.
