I start with the presumption that there is a favorable solution to a client's legal problems, and hold to that presumption until I am convinced, beyond any reasonable doubt, that there is no feasible remedy.. My passion is for any area of the law relating to land, whether it be zoning, municipal, environmental, real estate, easement, adverse possession, or boundary law.   People's identities are often deeply rooted in where they live, how they use their land, and how others respect their rights.  The right to protect one's land against trespassers, to curb inappropriate nearby development, or to gain  relief from senseless government restrictions is one of the few values in society that is really worth fighting for.. Much of the time it is possible to reach a win-win settlement of a land or zoning dispute.  However, when that is not possible, it is essential to hire an attorney who deeply understands the intricacies of these areas of the law.  Land law is combination of the very ancient and the very modern, with all sorts of intricate procedures mixed in.  It is fascinating but complicated.. There are times when I wish I were younger -- who wants to get old?  However,  experience has its advantages.   After practicing law for 32 years, there is very little I have not seen, and few places I have not been. Nothing surprises me much.  That does not mean that I'm stuck in my ways.  The more you know, the more you realize how much there is left to be discovered.  Leave no stone unturned.. No attorney can fix every problem.  However, there is no attorney who will try harder than me to find you a way out of your predicament, or a means to achieve your goal.. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. After high school, I first moved to Corvallis in 1993 and was an electrical engineering student at Oregon State University. After three years, I transferred to University of Colorado at Boulder to complete my engineering degree.After my undergraduate work was complete, I worked as an electrical engineer for six years, primarily with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Oregon. In 2002, I started law school as an evening student at Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College while continuing to work full time at Intel. During this time, I attended law school classes after work.. In 2004, I left Intel and took a clerking job at the Portland firm of Swanson, Thomas, and Coon. There I worked with a number of exceptional attorneys, primarily in the areas of workers' compensation and personal injury law. I also developed an interest in criminal law and criminal defense.In 2006, I took a position as a certified law student at the public defender's office of Multnomah Defenders in Portland. I was certified to appear in court on behalf of clients for misdemeanor trials, arraignments, motion hearings, and DUII diversions. After graduating from law school in 2006, I joined my father and wife to create West Valley Law Group PC in Corvallis, Oregon.  There, I focused primarily on general litigation practice and criminal defense.After two years of successful practice, in Corvallis, I relocated to Portland to continue the practice of law after Tim Brittle retired.  I have grown my law firm to as many as 5 attorneys, and have since reduced it to the convenience of a solo practice. I have practiced extensively in the area of family law, divorce, criminal law, restraining orders, and Oregon stalking orders. I have successfully argued before the Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Supreme Court.My hobbies include cycling, running, listening to music, running, computers, and recently, triathlons. Eric is a partner at Dunn Carney and heads our Insurance Defense Practice Team. Cheryl founded Rath Legal in 2012 and co-founded Pearl Legal Group in 2009. Between 1998 and 2009, Cheryl served as a Senior Executive at InFocus Corporation and as an Associate Attorney at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt. At Rath Legal, Cheryl provides personalized outside general counsel services to businesses and assists individuals with their business, employment, IP, litigation and regulatory compliance matters.

Arthur graduated from Pitzer College in Claremont, California with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. After studying towards a MA in History for a short while in Long Beach, he moved to Oregon where he received his Juris Doctorate from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon.. Before joining SK&H as an associate, Arthur worked as a Staff Attorney for St. Andrew Legal Clinic, providing legal representation in the areas of domestic relations, adoption, and estate planning. Prior to working at St. Andrew's, he worked as an associate with Ridehalgh & Associates, LLC.. Arthur has volunteered for the Multnomah County Volunteer Lawyer's Project and continues to be active as a fundraiser and volunteer for St. Andrew's Legal Clinic..
