Jay Griffith is part of Kell Alterman & Runstein, L.L.P’s Environmental and Natural Resources Practice Group. He joined the firm in 2016 from an in-house position at a large international steel manufacturer where he started in environmental compliance at the company’s Portland mill site. Jay’s compliance experience includes managing compliance with the company’s NPDES permits, Title V air permit, and hazardous and solid waste rules and regulations. His experience in heavy industry informs his understanding of his business client’s needs and gives him the unique ability to see challenges and opportunities from the client’s perspective. As senior counsel for the company, Jay supervised outside legal counsel on the Portland Harbor superfund project for several years and became well-versed in CERCLA practice. Jason Kafoury is a graduate of Tulane Law. He became a member of the Oregon State Bar in 2009. After his first week of law school, Jason was forced to evacuate Hurricane Katrina and ended up completing the 2005 fall semester at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. When he returned to Tulane, Jason helped lead the Moot Court Trial team to finish third in the nation out of 224 law schools at the American Association for Justice’s annual competition. I'm an immigration lawyer at Portland Immigration Law. Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about what made me want to practice immigration law.. I was born in Oregon and have spent most of my life here. After finishing Sandy High School and Oregon State University, I worked abroad teaching English as a second language in South Korea and Kyrgyzstan. While away, I missed my home and family here in Oregon, but was treated with great generosity and hospitality throughout my travels. In Kyrgyzstan, I met my wife--the first person with whom I would navigate the U.S. immigration process.. During law school, I worked for Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees (SOAR) and later the Oregon Justice Resource Center (OJRC)--both Portland-based non-profits--providing immigration legal services to individuals who did not have the means to hire a private attorney. These were meaningful experiences for me because they gave me the opportunity to use the knowledge I had been cultivating at Lewis & Clark Law School to make real and positive changes in people's lives.. Later, I spent a year working for the Troutdale City Attorney's Office prosecuting misdemeanors in municipal court. Spending time as a prosecutor provided me with a valuable look into the criminal justice system. It gave me the opportunity to understand the process and reasoning behind the charges leveled against those I now assist.. In my daily life, I try to remember the kindness strangers showed me when I was far away from everything and everyone I knew. In doing so, I can remind myself of how vulnerable we are at times and how we all have a duty to one another as neighbors, no matter the physical locations of our domiciles. I was born in the mountains outside of Wolf Creek in rural Josephine County.  I grew up in Ashland and am a proud graduate of Ashland Middle School and Ashland High School.. I was born in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. I returned to Oregon for college and law school, and have lived in Portland for over 10 years. I spent 1980-81 cleaning the undersides of airplanes while becoming a commercial rated pilot and a certified flight instructor, instrument and airplane. I loved teaching and flying in instrument conditions, basically in the clouds or fog, using only the instruments in the airplane to maintain safe flight. In 1981, I decided I didn't want to seek a job with an airline--though I have continued to be a current  flight instructor since 1981.I enrolled in the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College in the fall of 1981 and graduated in 1984. I spent several years working for the law school's legal clinic where I primarily assisted low-income people needing help with consumer problems. I went in to private practice upon his admission to the Bar in September, 1984. Since then, I have represented thousands of people in getting a fair resolution of their claim against wrongdoers and insurance companies. Prior to joining Lane Powell, I was a federal prosecutor for approximately 17 years in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. As a federal prosecutor, I tried numerous criminal jury trials and conducted scores of federal grand jury investigations. I also assisted other government agencies in conducting related civil litigation and administrative proceedings. I have extensive experience in investigations involving a myriad of federal crimes, including securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, bankruptcy fraud, health care fraud, bank fraud, mail fraud, environmental crimes and money laundering offenses.
