Between college and law school, he worked in the United States Senate in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III of Illinois. In 1983, Doug graduated cum laude from Suffolk University Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. He then returned to Maine, and from 1983 to 1985, practiced in Bangor with now Supreme Judicial Court Justice Warren M. Silver.
