But now a few words about me:  I moved from Connecticut to Arizona as a young teen back in 1978.  I have lived in the Phoenix area ever since.  My teenage and early adult years were marked by enjoying long, hot summers while bragging to friends and family back east about how bearable 110 degree days were, because after all it was a "dry heat."  It's funny how that perception dwindles away as we get older.. After graduating law school in 1990, I fulfilled my life-long dream by embarking upon a 3,704-mile solo bicycle trip across the country, refusing to quit pedalling until I reached my aunt's house in Cranston, Rhode Island some two and a half months later (talk about young adult resiliency!)  I will never forget the places I saw, the people I met, and the encouragement bestowed upon me by perfect strangers once they learned about my trip.  It would become the first of two major "missions" in my life.. In 1995, after spending over four years trying major felony cases with the Maricopa County Public Defender's Office, I co-founded the law firm DeFusco & Udelman, P.L.C. here in Scottsdale with my close friend, Randy Udelman, whom I have known since we attended high school together. For the next twenty years we devoted our practice to representing accident victims, crime victims, and victims of unreasonable conduct by insurance companies.   We were privileged to represent many amazing people and to guide them through what has often been the most difficult time in their lives.  Even today, we remain in close contact with quite a few of our former clients, some of whom we have not represented in many years.. While I always thought I'd never marry another attorney, in 2006 I embarked upon my second "mission" in life:  marrying my wife Bryn, also an attorney.  "Honey, I'm not getting any younger," I told her when she asked me if I wanted to wait before having little ones. We now have two beautiful children and, despite busy careers, maintain balance and remain very active in our children's school and extracurricular activities.. On January 1, 2016, my wife Bryn and I founded the law firm DeFusco Law, P.L.C. Later that year, we purchased our office building inside the Agua Caliente complex near Scottsdale and Shea Roads in Scottsdale, which now serves as the home offices for DeFusco Law.  We will continue to maintain a low-volume, referral-based practice and will continue my work of over the past two decades representing individuals on serious personal injury, wrongful death and insurance disputes. Our mission is simple:  We seek accountability for wrongful conduct which causes our clients physical, emotional and economic loss.. When not practicing law, my interests include aviation (bouncing around in a Piper aircraft among many airports in the Soutwestern United States), amateur astronomy, tickling the ivories (for piano bar patrons who pride themselves on singing the loudest), and encouraging my young son to be a proficient golfer and not a golf hacker like his old man.

John N. Wilborn is an associate with Surrano Law Offices and has been working with Charles Surrano since September 1994. He graduated from the University of North Dakota Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review and the Moot Court Competition.  Mr. Wilborn has been practicing in Arizona since 1991. Consistent with the firm’s practice, he litigates bad faith cases on behalf of policyholders. Mr. Wilborn  assists Mr. Surrano on many complex cases including the Diamond vs. General American case, which resulted in a $59 million verdict, and the Gibbs vs. Liberty Mutual case, which resulted in a $1.4 million verdict. In addition to assisting Mr. Surrano, he also litigates other policyholder claims. Mr. Wilborn has successfully certified class actions in Arizona State Court and Federal District Court. He has tried several cases to jury verdict as both a plaintiff’s and defense attorney, in both State and Federal Court. Mr. Wilborn has also argued before the Arizona Court of Appeals and is credited with three published opinions, Lloyd v. AMF Bowling Center, Inc. 195 Ariz. 44, 985 P.2d 625 (1999), Benevides v. The Arizona State Property and Casualty Guarantee Fund, 184 Ariz. 610,911 P.2d 616 (1996) and Miller v. American Family Insurance Company, 759 F. Supp 2d. 1144 (2010). Mr. Wilborn has been a guest on the nationally syndicated program, Court TV, and interviewed on television locally about specific bad faith cases. Mr. Wilborn has been a guest speaker at the Atlanta, Ga., ATLA National Convention in 2002, the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association 2003 and AAJ National Convention in Vancouver, B.C., 2011.  He has also spoken at Arizona CLE seminars on a variety of topics involving bad faith. He is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Arizona State Bar and the Maricopa County Bar.

Carolyn R. Tatkin brings to the Firm over 25 years of broad legal experience in areas including insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, construction defect litigation, general business and commercial litigation, as well as a concentration in business and consumer bankruptcy law. Her experience includes both trial and appellate work in state and federal courts, encompassing all aspects of motion practice and oral advocacy, including oral arguments before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel. Ms. Tatkin has also been a presenter and co-author of materials for several state and county bar sponsored bankruptcy seminars, from basic to more advanced levels of bankruptcy expertise.. Carolyn is originally from Ohio, where she graduated from Ohio State University and Cleveland Marshall College of Law. Her horses are her lifelong hobby and her passion. She lives in Scottsdale with her husband, teenage son and daughter, dogs, cat and horses.

Bryn was a trial attorney with the Office of Public Advocate for nine years before starting with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in 2012. In 2006, she was recognized by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for her outstanding contributions to the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Teen Court Programs. She was also nominated for the Arizona Public Defender Association’s Rising Star Award.. As a mother and advocate for justice, Bryn is passionate about assisting those who have suffered harm because of the wrongful conduct of others. Relying on nearly fifteen years working with children in the juvenile justice system, Bryn is dedicated to assisting children and teens who have been seriously injured as well as helping parents navigate their child’s claim. Her background also assists in gathering evidence for victims in criminal cases for future use in civil cases against criminal defendants.. Bryn serves on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest and New Life Center Domestic Violence Shelter. She is also heavily involved with the Scottsdale Unified School District serving on the Yes to Children Committee as well as Sequoya Elementary and Cocopah Middle School Site Councils. Her past and present volunteer organizations include: Treasure House, Business United for Scottsdale Schools (BUSS), Yes to Children M&O Override PAC, Girl Scouts, Parents of Murdered Children, Arizona Special Olympics, North Scottsdale Little League, The Solel Preschool, 4Mati Foundation and Maricopa County Teen Court..
