I'm a partner and attorney with the Seattle law firm of Spencer Anderson & Buhr, PLLC.  See more about us at our website: .  My practice with the firm is dedicated 100% to consumer bankruptcy matters. I'm also a family guy who's happily lived in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle with for the last 10 years.. I spent my first several years out of college as an engineer working for the Boeing Company at Everett and Renton sites.  But I soon decided to change careers and enrolled in the evening law program at Seattle University School of Law, while still working at Boeing.  While in law school I had the opportunity to work in the Ronald E. Peterson Bankruptcy Clinic, which provided me experience in bankruptcy law.  My experience working with in law clinic with actual clients was a key factor in my decision to practice bankruptcy law full-time and assist those facing financial hardship.. After graduating from law school, I volunteered for the King County Bar Association’s Housing Justice Project where I assisted tenants facing eviction proceedings.  While this was a rewarding pro bono experience, I was more interested in bankruptcy and debt relief law.  I signed up to be a volunteer attorney for the King County Bar Association’s Seattle Debt Clinic where my primary focus is helping low-income debtors who cannot otherwise afford an attorney file for bankruptcy protection.  I continue to use my legal skills in practice and through volunteer work at the Debt Clinic to helping people obtain a financial fresh start in life.

I was born and raised in Seattle, attending Roosevelt High School. During the summers I had a number of jobs including a ride operator ("carny") at the Seattle center and a warehouse worker at Safeway. Following high school, I left Seattle for Los Angeles where I attended UCLA as an undergraduate from where I graduated early as an economics and political science major and left to travel.  I was accepted into Boston University Law School and worked in Washington DC for two summers; the first for the Peace Corp in an administrative capacity evaluating recruiting techniques for high demand skills, and the second for the Federal Power Commission on a special home energy conservation program.  My time in Washington DC coincided with Watergate and Nixon's resignation and was quite exciting.  Following law school I returned to Seattle and after passing the bar, cut my teeth on the construction litigation surrounding the Kingdome.  After three and a half years I took leave of the practice of law and traveled for one year around the world with my wife.  I have been engaged in the active practice of law since my return.  Following my return, my wife and I raised two great kids who are now young adults.   I continue to be interested in travel and have enjoyed a number of adventures.  I enjoy many sports including skiing.  I collect wine.  I continue to enjoy the practice of law and my clients.

I lead Harris Sliwoski’s intellectual property team and oversee our international practice, with a particular focus on cross-border IP matters.. Over the past decade, I’ve worked across China, Latin America, and beyond, developing a deep understanding of the global IP landscape. My work often centers on brand protection, and I’m frequently called upon to serve as an expert witness in international IP litigation and arbitration. Many of my clients operate in fast-evolving sectors — like cannabis, psychedelics, and Web3 — where the legal frameworks are still catching up with innovation.. Beyond IP, I also manage Harris Sliwoski’s Latin America desk, collaborating closely with our Mexico-based lawyers. I regularly facilitate complex, multilingual negotiations involving Chinese-, English-, and Spanish-speaking stakeholders. My fluency in all three languages has been a key asset in helping clients navigate high-stakes international disputes and transactions.. My global IP journey started in Guangzhou, where I served as a U.S. diplomat focused on securing fair treatment for American businesses and advocating for stronger IP enforcement in China. From there, I transitioned to the private sector — first as a foreign legal advisor at a Shanghai law firm, then as part of one of the oldest American firms operating in China. Later, I led the legal team at a Hong Kong-based brand protection consultancy, helping companies protect their IP and operations across Greater China, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.. This combination of legal, linguistic, and cultural fluency has shaped how I work: I’m passionate about helping clients solve the tough, cross-border IP challenges that come with operating in a global economy.

I have been zealously representing people accused of criminal wrongdoing for over 20 years. I like trying cases to juries and I like making legal arguments to judges. I have a proven track record of defending complicated of cases, at trial, on appeal, and in post-conviction proceedings. I demand that my clients' legal rights be honored to their fullest, and when appropriate, I call out police and prosecutorial overreach and misconduct, including instances of racial bias. I am based in Seattle, but I do take on cases in jurisdictions other than King County, including during pre-charging investigations.. My expertise is in defending serious violent crimes (like murder, assault, rape, robbery) and other matters that involve expert witness testimony, especially regarding mental disorders, or standards of criminal defense practice. My peers look to me for help with those types of cases. As a trial lawyer, I've secured dismissals, reductions, and not guilty jury verdicts. As an appellate defender, I have been able to get my clients’ convictions overturned, win them new trials, or re-sentencings.. At present, a lot of my work focuses on Personal Restraint Petitions (PRPs) and CrR 7.8 motions to vacate, as well as complex "second chance" resentencing hearings (be it under State v. Blake, SB6164, In re Monschke, State v. Houston-Sconiers). I find great satisfaction in creatively working with a client to meet their goals in such challenging cases, especially those involving youthfulness as mitigation.. I look forward to connecting with potential clients, or their families, to see if my skillset is a good fit for your needs.
