Jo-Hanna brings to her practice many years of legal experience, a strong belief in individual rights and justice for all, and a continuing commitment to effectively and compassionately address the immediate and long-term needs of her clients.
I’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest my whole life. I love it here. I grew up in Lake Stevens, WA, and earned my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Seattle. After taking a law school course on “Corporations, Law and Society,” I knew I wanted to help Seattle businesses with their legal services. I came to fully appreciate the impact of business on society and how the law can shape this impact. I appreciate the relationship between business and our communities, and I am passionate about making it easier for businesses to positively impact our community.. I have worked for sole proprietorships, public companies, and non-profits; I currently sit on the board of a non-profit corporation. Before working in the legal field, I worked in the banking and investment industries, the food-service industry, and the technology industry (cloud-computing services). Since joining the legal industry, I have worked for a sole practitioner, a downtown firm, and volunteered for Climate Solutions, a non-profit corporation supporting proposition that clean energy and broadly-shared economic prosperity can go hand-in-hand.. My primary practice areas are securities, business formations, technology contracts, investment advisor regulation, and mergers and acquisitions.. When I’m not in the office, there’s a good chance I’m cooking, relaxing on the couch with my fiancée watching a tv series (all-time favorites are The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men), or playing or watching sports. I play soccer and golf, and fervently follow too many sports teams: the UW Huskies, Sounders, Arsenal, and Bay Area pro sports teams. I’m also a bit of a self-professed nerd and enjoy reading about technology and developing websites and web applications. My favorite place to visit outside of the Northwest is Lake Tahoe.
Intellectual property and general business counsel.
In addition to my workers' compensation law practice, I am a single mother of two boys - now men -- and I enjoy playing classical piano.. I was a piano performance major when I began college and switched to a pre-law major after discovering I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to the world through working as an attorney. It was at that point, I completely stopped playing the piano.. Twenty-seven years later, I started practicing the piano again and even took up piano lessons again with the intent of competing in International Amateur Piano Competitions. I was a winner in the Seattle International Piano Competition in 2010 and had the opportunity to perform in Benaroya Hall. In 2011, I was a quarter-finalist (top 15 out of 100) in the Paris International Piano Competition. My next competition is again in Paris scheduled in March 2015. My favorite piece (at this time) is Chopin's 4th Ballade in f minor. Some days I can play it better than others.
I was born and raised in the Chicago-land area, and will always consider myself a Chicago girl at heart although I absolutely love living in Seattle. I earned a degree in finance from the University of Illinois and started my career as a futures and options auditor. I went on to become a financial analyst for a couple of years before deciding that I needed a career change where I could more directly work with and help people. I attended law school at Tulane University in New Orleans, and am incredibly proud to have lived in such a diverse, rich, and amazing city. The time I lived in New Orleans was a period of time where the city was filled with unfaltering hope, revitalization, and rejuvenation post-Katrina. I will be forever grateful that I was able to call myself a New Orleanian for three incredible years.. During law school, I interned at the Cook County Criminal Court in Chicago, and at the Northwest Justice Project in Seattle. After graduating from law school, I worked for the Honorable Judge Julie Spector at the King County Superior Court.. I feel very fortunate to be able to say that I love my job. I love being able to help people as they transition from the familiar to the unknown – to an unknown filled with endless possibility. Nothing brings me greater joy in my work than seeing the evolution my clients undergo from the beginning of their case to the conclusion. I think many people are surprised by their own strength and transformations; it’s thrilling to be a part of their journey!. Family law deals with two areas many people hold most dear – their family and their finances. It is a highly emotionally charged area of law, and I enjoy bringing my financial background to the table. It is my job as an attorney to advocate to the best of my ability for my clients, to educate them on the law, and to listen to them when all they need is an ear.. I love music and am a classically trained pianist as well as a saxophone player. A huge sports fan, I am always rooting on my Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Fighting Illini. After living in the incredible city of New Orleans, I am an avid supporter of any and all things championing the rebuilding of NOLA. My favorite activity outside of the office is spending time with my daughter and my husband. I live with my husband, our daughters.
I was born and raised in Seattle, and am pleased to practice in our great Pacific Northwest. This is my home. I graduated from law school in 1984 and went to work for the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. This provided an opportunity to develop trial skills and the ability to present cases to judges and juries.. From 1986-1990, I was the managing attorney for the main Seattle Office for Hyatt Legal Services. This position provided an opportunity to analyze and solve various issues that confront a general practice such as: Domestic Relations, Criminal Defense, Bankruptcy, Real Estate, Wills, and miscellaneous consumer matters. It also provided many opportunities to practice in State and Federal court.. From 1990-97, I was an insurance defense attorney for the Seattle law firm of Alexander & Bierman. For several years, I defended hundreds of cases on the insurance company's behalf. I know how insurance companies value claims and the techniques they employ in an effort to detract from the value of a claim.. In 1997, I opened my own law practice. I specialize in representing people injured by the negligence of others against the insurance company.. My mission is to utilize over 30 years of experience to obtain the best outcome in settlement or trial for my clients. I give thoughtful attention to all facts and legal issues, give you information about your rights, evaluate your claim with an experienced eye, and significantly increase the amount of compensation you receive. I impart realistic objectives and provide the services needed to realize those objectives. Let me use my experience from years of defending the insurance company to your advantage.
I specialize in helping people out with their tough legal problems.
I provide corporate and transactional legal services to both established and entrepreneurial clients, either working with existing in-house legal departments or in an "outside general counsel" role. I also provide legal services as "Of Counsel" to Mundt MacGregor L.L.P. My current practice includes merger and acquisition-related work as well as technology and design licensing and other general corporate contracts and matters.
I help startups, entrepreneurs, and business owners identify and reach goals. I assist clients with forming and structuring entities, raising capital from investors through equity and debt financings, protecting intellectual property, and drafting contracts to protect the client’s interests. I use the tools and experience I have both as an attorney and entrepreneur to create practical legal strategies for each particular client.. I work as part of a team of entrepreneurial-minded business lawyers who provide practical advice, transparent flat rates, and quick turnaround times.. We use custom technology to decrease costs, increase efficiency, and provide the highest quality legal services at competitive rates. We offer transparent flat rates, so you will know upfront what services you will receive and at what price. We remove unnecessary legalese and craft our documents so they are easier to understand. We are accessible; we keep you informed on your matter and respond promptly to your questions and concerns.. We help businesses with all aspects of startup and operation, including business formations, contracts, intellectual property protection, securities (financing), commercial real estate, and mergers and acquisitions.. Outside the office I enjoy spending time with my wife, two sons, and dog; hanging out outside: hiking, running, backpacking, fly fishing, skiing, BBQing, watching the hops in my backyard grow, and rock climbing. Experimenting with brewing beer; swimming and waterskiing at Lake Chelan; rooting for the Seattle Seahawks; and drinking good coffee and IPAs.
I have spent my entire legal career representing injured workers. I enjoy it because I get to help people with real injuries get the medical and other benefits they are entitled to under Washington law. I handle workers' compensation claims while they are being administered by the Department of Labor and Industries (DLI) or by a self insured employer. I also routinely represent injured workers in appeals before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and higher Washington courts. I have two daughters.
I have been involved as an attorney in the criminal justice system for 30 years. I have been a public defender, counsel to the Mayor's Office and supervising attorney in a prosecutor's office.
