I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, but I have lived in Seattle since 1989.  I graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000.  After a short clerkship in the Washington Court of Appeals, I joined Scott, Kinney & Mack, PLLC, and practiced there for fifteen years. In April 2016, I joined Emerald Law Group.. My primary practice areas are personal injury, primarily motor vehicle accidents, premises liability (slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall injuries), dog bites, and childhood sex abuse.  One of the things I most love about my job is getting to know all sorts of people and learning their stories.

I grew up in Tennessee and received my college and law school education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.. From 1970 to 1974 I practiced with the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps in Vietnam, Pearl Harbor, and other duty stations afloat and ashore.  Following my tour of duty, I became an associate with Mullavey, Prout in 1974.. My practice is predominantly personal injury trials, estate planning and probate, insurance, maritime and general litigation.  I have tried numerous jury and non-jury cases in state and federal courts.

I grew up in Michigan and knew I would go to law school after reading a biography of famous Chicago defense attorney Clarence Darrow. His stands for union workers, against the death penalty and his work on behalf of criminal defendants made him my hero.. After getting my undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan I went to law school at the University of Illinois. Following that I clerked for two different judges on the Illinois Supreme Court, Justice Stamos and Justice Miller, and learned a great deal of how the law works in real life.. I moved to Chicago, home of Clarence Darrow, and got my dream job--a public defender at the Cook County Public Defender's Office. I eventually tried over 50 jury cases, winning multiple cases from DUI's to drug, burglary, rape and murder trials. I was offered a position at a leading progressive law firm--People's Law Office-- that worked for innocent clients and sued the Chicago Police Department for false arrest, police brutality and wrongful convictions. I eventually made partner and was successful in getting an innocent client--Aaron Patterson--off death row after he was pardoned by Governor Ryan, following a successful appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court granting him a new hearing.. I was also able to free an innocent man from serving a 48 year prison sentence for a murder he did not commit by showing that he had been framed by a Chicago Police Officer.  His name was Rene Castillo and the case was People v. Castillo, 89 CR 2461.. In 2002 I moved to Seattle to take a job as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. I worked there for six years, winning a rape trial, and successfully getting a number of cases dismissed.. In 2008 I left the Federal Defender's Office to concentrate on my own practice in Federal Court, representing people in trials and appeals to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Since opening my own law firm I have had success in getting one federal charge dismissed completely (US v. Tho Le, CR12-00041RSL) as well as getting a number of charges reduced and sentences greatly lower then called for by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

I greatly enjoy helping my clients navigate their legal needs.  I make an effort to eduate people about their case and other legal matters as much as possible.  I am a big believer in educating people so that they are able to assist themselves and most importantly know their legal rights.. When I am not helping clients I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and participating in triathlons.

I greatly enjoy and cultivate a general business and personal injury practice, with long term client relationships going back to 1979, when I relocated from New York City to Seattle (where I am a native).  I purposefully maintain a small law firm practice, with an emphasis on providing excellent service, so that we can hopefully continue a mutually profitable relationship in the future.

I have has been named one of the top 100 lawyers in Washington by Seattle Magazine and voted one of the top 10 “super lawyers” by Washington Law & Politics. I have been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1995, and for 2010 and 2019 that publication selected me as Seattle-area Family Law "Lawyer of the Year."  I have made 70-plus presentations at education seminars for other divorce lawyers, on topics such as business valuation, divorce taxation and complex property divisions.

I graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1993, after working as a ranch hand, baker and mental health counselor.. I was fortunate to spend twenty-two years with the Seattle law firm MacDonald Hoague & Bayless - a wonderful place that truly worked to advance justice and goodness.  In 2015, I formed a firm to specialize in my favorite practice area -- helping people who have been denied short-term disability and long-term disability benefits. Most of these cases fall under the federal law known as "ERISA."  My practice is now 100% devoted to this area of the law.  I like it.. I graduated from the UW in 1977 and practiced accouting in Seattle, WA before heading off to law school.  I am an inactive CPA.  I attended the Universtity of San Francisco School of Law and worked for a large law firm in SF during my second and third years of law school. After graduating, I returned to Seattle to practice with my father, Carl Jonson, and my brother Mike.  My father is no longer with us but Mike and I carry on the family tradition. We are third generation lawyers and we take the business very seriously.  We have client relationships that date back to our firm's inception.  My practice has narrowed over time and the majority of my work is now performed for water utilities located in Western and Central Washington.

I frequently come into my clients' lives when they are at the end of their rope. The resiliency of the human spirit never ceases to impress me.. I see my role as first, helping clients first to determine their priorities clearly, second, developing a plan to achieve as many priorities as possible, and third, implementing the plan, with modifications as required as the case progresses.. I focus on helping people with their technology and intellectual property issues.. I have been involved in the prosecution of patent applications in the computer science, electrical devices and related fields since 1998 and with Internet and technology related law since 1995. I also counsels clients on patent portfolio strategy, patentability and infringement matters. My varied practical experiences range from distributed object oriented programming to kernel-level memory management to streaming media. My areas of emphasis covers a wide variety of patent, trademark and trade secret issues, with particular focus on network and security related applications. Typical clients of mine are software and technology companies as well as related inventors.

I focus my practice on the representation of property owners whether corporations, limited liability companies, individuals or homeowners associations.  I am chair of the Construction Practice Team, serve on the Williams Kastner board of directors and am chair of the Loss Prevention Committee.  My recent trial success includes representation of General Metals of Tacoma, Inc in a contract dispute with its general contractor, Bean Environmental, LLC, on an environmental dredging project to remediate the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, Washington.  Following a five week jury trial in the United States District Court in the Western District of Washington, the jury awarded my client $6.37 million for damages sustained as a result of the general contractor’s failure to perform its contract obligations.  The decision in General Metals of Tacoma, Inc. v. Bean Environmental, LLC was upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in November, 2008.. I was named to Super Lawyers from 2006 – 2008 by Washington Law & Politics magazine, and in 2003 was named one of Seattle’s Top Lawyers in construction law by Seattle Magazine.

I focus my practice on securities litigation, antitrust matters and complex commercial disputes. I defend public companies in both state and federal courts in securities and antitrust class actions, and shareholder derivative litigation. I'm also also experienced in contract disputes, trade secrets litigation, stock-options backdating cases, and mergers and acquisitions, and have represented a major software company in two antitrust jury trials.

I focus my practice in complex commercial litigation. I defend corporate clients in the areas of commercial and real estate transactions, insurance coverage and bad faith, and major personal injury matters. I represent petroleum industry clients against environmental and toxic tort claims. I regularly defend class actions, including employment and insurance related matters.

I first became a lawyer because, as corny as it might seem, I was enthralled by watching Perry Mason when I was a young boy.  The cool and calm demeanor he exhibited in any situation, his crafty cross examination of witnesses that somehow always led to a confession, and not to mention he won all his cases.  While in law school, I volunteered at local legal clinics to help people with everyday legal issues they face, from workplace discrimination to holding a bad landlord accountable.  It was during this time that I saw what power the law held to help people, to improve people's lives, and to be a "big stick" when necessary.  This is one of the reasons I chose to represent people charged with crimes for a living, because so many of my clients are good people even if they made a mistake.  And the U.S. Constitution requires that everyone accused of a crime be entitled to a zealous defense, someone to protect their rights and challenge the government's authority when necessary.  This is why I do what I do.. As a former prosecuting attorney and Judge Pro Tem, I have the experience and knowledge needed to successfully represent those accused of crimes, whether it is assault, DUI, suspended license, theft, and all other criminal charges.  I also handle hundreds of traffic citations a year with an extremely high success rate.  I regularly attend and speak at seminars on trial advocacy, stay up to date on new developments in my field, and provide all the resources my clients need to get them through the process successfully.   But I also take pride in my client service, keeping clients updated on their cases' progress and informed of all developments.   I am also there 24 hours a day if my clients need a question answered or simply want to discuss their case.. My wife and I recently bought our first house in the Bryant neighborhood of Seattle.  Most of our free time is spent enjoying our two energetic young boys.
