Brian Cheng carries outstanding academic credentials and extensive experience as a successful negotiator and business management advisor.. In May 2011, Brian received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, Order of Barristers, from Seattle University School of Law. In law school, his academic accomplishments included two CALI Awards for achieving the highest grades in the studies of Legal Writing II and Computer Crime. Furthermore, while at Seattle University, he represented his school in moot court and dispute resolution competitions.. In addition to his academic credentials, Brian also brings to our firm his experience working under the auspices of two judges—as a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Theresa Doyle of the King County Superior Court, and as a judicial extern for the Honorable Judge Christine Quinn-Brintnall of the Washington State Court of Appeals.. Furthermore, Brian has a comprehensive understanding of landlord-tenant law. After graduating from law school, Brian was a Public Interest Fellow with the King County Bar Association (KCBA) Housing Justice Project, where he provided pro bono representation of low-income tenants facing eviction. As a Public Interest Fellow, Brian has prevented evictions by winning in court and has saved vast amounts of money for his client by negotiating countless settlements. His in-depth familiarity with landlord-tenant law makes him an effective advocate for landlords seeking to resolve disputes with their tenants and for tenants facing eviction.. During law school, Brian volunteered his legal skills to Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada, an organization that has special consultative status with the United Nations. There, he used his legal training to rectify injustices around the globe. In 2010, one of his major projects involved drafting a letter to the Rwandan government to cite violations of its treaty obligations and demand the release of an American law professor, charged under the Rwandan criminal law of “genocide ideology.” He also presented a legal memorandum analyzing the high profile case of Mr. Omar Khadr, a Canadian who was detained at Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba in 2002.. Prior to attending law school, Brian was a Deputy Commissioner and Group Commissioner with Scouts Canada in Vancouver, B.C., where he grew up. There, Brian represented his constituency of over 4000 youth and leaders in the business decisions of the largest non-profit youth movement in the country. During his tenure, Brian’s accomplishments included founding two new Scout Groups, overhauling another, and overseeing the newfound growth of an organization that had been declining in membership for over a decade. Today, Brian applies the management and leadership skills he acquired as a Commissioner when he advises clients in business dealings and negotiates successful deals on their behalf. For his volunteerism and commitment to public service, Queen Elizabeth II awarded to Brian the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

Brent excels at taking complicated problems and making them accessible for his clients, jurors and judges. His M.B.A. training allows him to assist clients in making decisions that are truly in their best financial interests.  He is honored to be ranked "AV" - Preeminent - by his colleagues in the widely recognized Martindale publication.. Brent concentrates on insurance policy and bad faith disputes. His practice is unusual; he represents both insurance policy holders and insurance companies, depending on the case, gaining unique insights into both perspectives. This experience allows him to get to the real issues in an effective, efficient way. He is a regular lecturer on insurance issues at legal seminars for other attorneys.. Working for policy holders, Brent has obtained millions of dollars in jury verdicts and settlements for his clients, often including a recovery of his attorney fees, from insurers that wrongfully denied claims. Sometimes he convinces Insurance Companies to reverse course on a denied claim without resort to the legal system, but when a lawsuit is necessary, Brent does not hesitate to go to trial and through the appellate process to obtain the best result for his clients.. Working for insurers, Brent has successfully defended many multi-million dollar bad faith claims, from motion practice and jury trials in State and Federal Court, all the way through the Washington Supreme Court. He is acutely aware that insureds can exhibit their own brand of bad faith, twisting the legal protections meant to aid consumers into offensive, unrecognizable claims that promote nothing more than unjustified enrichment, forcing premium increases for every other insured.. Outside of insurance, Brent has achieved outstanding results for clients on a wide variety of matters ranging from professional negligence claims to disputes between co-owners of companies.

Both my parents own small businesses, so it is very personal to me to see local businesses succeed and make an impact. After moving to Seattle for my JD/MBA, I interned at Apex and I stayed with Apex to build my career because of Apex’s focus on empowering entrepreneurs to make a difference.. I serve local for-profits and nonprofits through formation, growth, and exit strategies. I empower both for-profit and nonprofit founders to establish their new venture correctly from day one. Working with a business from the start builds a solid foundation from the first day they open their doors.. In my off time, I enjoy being with my kiddos and husband, baking, watching cooking shows, and running.

Born in Spanish Harlem, I originally wanted to be a weatherman. But as I grew into adulthood and after my family moved further north in Manhattan into a drug-infested area of Harlem's Washington Heights, I began to realize how difficult life was for so many of those around me. In college I learned how laws are created, and also how many of them are misused. I was appalled at the level of discrimination and oppression that was sanctioned by courts and ignored by lawmakers. My personal experience in being repeatedly stopped by police for no apparent reason when driving home from work at night galvanized my conviction to do whatever it took to go to law school and become a lawyer. I knew that I wanted to use my skills primarily to give ordinary people a chance at justice. I wanted to be a legal pioneer.. After earning my B.A. in political science from Fordham University in 1976, I went on to law school. I received my Juris Doctor from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law in 1980 and was admitted to the California Bar that year. I worked from 1981 to 1984 as co-counsel on numerous cases with the legendary Howard Moore Jr., known throughout the country as the leading scholar on issues of individual liberty.. I've been serving the greater San Francisco Bay Area since starting my private practice in 1984 and expanded my practice to Washington upon admission to the Washington State Bar in 2000. After 35 years in the practice and continuing study of law and advocating for the rights of others, I now wish to focus on areas where I believe I can do the most good.
