I knew I wanted to be a criminal lawyer since I was an undergrad.  I've worked in criminal law firms since the 1980s and clerked under some of Michigan's best lawyers. For my entire career, I've done 90%+ criminal appeals.  My philosophy is deep research.  I subscribe to one of the broadest Westlaw plans available and do not confine my research to my own state. I am active on many national  listservs dealing with Criminal Appellate issues so that I can stay on top of trends in other states and I routlinely blog about cases on review to the Michigan Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court.  This is tremendously important because of criminal retroactivity rules.  If I have an issue in the system when the United States Supreme Court or Michigan Supreme Court hands down new law, my clients generally get the benefit of the new rule.  If I don't, then the "ship has often sailed" when the ruling is announced.  Being on the cutting edge has given many of my clients the benefit of favorable decisions that otherwise would not have applied to them.. While Michigan does not require continuing legal credits, I take far more than is required by the states that do require it.  Law is constantly changing and staying on top of these changes is paramount to my philosophy.

Deborah entered private practice as an appellate specialist following a judicial clerkship in the Michigan Court of Appeals with the Hon. Michael J. Kelly. For over three decades, she has served as lead counsel in hundreds of appeals at both the state and federal levels, involving a wide range of practice areas, including product liability, medical malpractice, insurance coverage, Daubert, civil rights discrimination, and professional liability. In the early 1990s, Deborah developed a particular interest in insurance coverage law and now devotes a significant part of her practice to preparing coverage opinions and litigating declaratory judgment actions.. Deborah was instrumental in forming the Appellate Practice Section of the Michigan State Bar and served as its Founding Chair in 1995. Twelve years later, she assisted with the formation of the Insurance and Indemnity Law Section of the Michigan State Bar.
