Speaking Engagements:     Elissa Westbrook Smith has spoken on a range of topics from sexual harassment in the workplace, wage and hour rules, and bankruptcy, to groups like the Maple Shade Business Association, the Rutgers Club of Philadelphia and through Lorman Seminars.  Extracurricular:    Elissa Westbrook Smith has a very busy family which takes up most of her free time.  She has two daughters, Auralee and Annabelle, who are both active in school, music and sport,s and her husband Justin Smith is a Vice Principal at Cherokee High School in Marlton.  Elissa enjoys spending as much time as possible with her family, but also enjoys reading, cooking and walking her dog Maggie.      Between college and law school, Elissa worked a variety of jobs.  She taught English in Spain, trained as a baker, waited tables, wrote for a newspaper and was a certified picture framer for a time.  Working a variety of jobs for several years helped develop a strong empathy for people of all walks of life in all work situations.  She is a good listener and genuinely interested in the needs of her clients.

I love being a lawyer because it is incredibly rewarding when a new client comes in who is stressed out because of a problem they're having and through the hour I spend with them, I can see the anxiety melting away.  I am privileged to have this gift that I am able to connect with people and let them know it's going to be OK.  My job is to let them know that we can handle their problem so they don't have to worry anymore.  Of course I still have to do the work afterward and actually fix their problems, but that's the easy part.  The challenge is to make my clients feel like they can turn their burden over to me and let me take care of it.  Once they do that they can walk out of here in a much better frame of mind, able to get on with their lives, and that's just such a good feeling for me.

I am an associate attorney at McDowell Posternock Law . I concentrate my practice in Bankruptcy, debt management, and asset retention/liquidation matters both in and out of court.. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington and a 2008 graduate of Rutgers University School of Law, Camden, NJ. While I was in law school, I maintained full-time employment with the Pennsylvania real estate developer the Goldenberg Group and was active in the Rutgers Law Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project, which Project I now serve on the steering committee as a local Bankruptcy attorney. I am admitted in the District of New Jersey and Eastern District of Pennsylvania. I am currently a member of the Lawyers Advisory Committee for the Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.. I enjoy my work representing both Debtors and Creditors in Bankruptcy actions, in Bankruptcy Chapters 7, 11 and 13. Additionally, I plan and participate in seminars through the state and local bar associations presenting topics concerning the current foreclosure crisis and Bankruptcy practice.. I enjoy playing the violin in my time-off and was a member of the symphony orchestra in Wilmington, NC. I enjoy reading for fun, but also to remain current on hot-topics being decided in the courts and in the government.
