Firm: Nichols Zauzig Sandler P.C.

Mr. Nichols is a principal in the thirteen-lawyer firm of Nichols Zauzig Sandler P.C., in the Woodbridge, Stafford and Tysons Corner, Virginia offices. He concentrates his practice on family law matters, including divorce, custody, child support, distribution of assets and determination of alimony, as well as related matters such as protective orders and criminal defense. As a litigator, his practice routinely sees him in all levels of our court system.. Mr. Nichols' broad experience in all areas of family practice provides a substantial benefit to his clients. He has had the good fortune to handle clients with a wide range of financial backgrounds, from those of modest means to clients whose incomes and assets are significant. His philosophy in handling any case is to litigate to the fullest if necessary, but to settle in an amicable way, if possible. He recognizes that “seek and destroy” is not a fruitful approach when there are children, careers, and other common interests that will bind two people together long after the ink is dry on a final divorce, and therefore, a more practical approach is oftentimes best.. Mr. Nichols is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and he has received Martindale Hubbell's highest rating (AV) for legal ability and ethics. Mr. Nichols has also been recognized in the specialty of Family Law by "Best Lawyers in America," Thompson Reuter's Virginia "Super Lawyers," and Washingtonian Magazine.

I practice law throughout New Jersey and New York focusing on most areas of civil litigation, and manage a successful transactional practice. I am more and more known as an experienced transactional real estate attorney and litigator, but I love most areas of civil law, with an emphasis on complex commercial litigation, and business law.. I am grateful to be a seasoned and successful trial attorney, and have a knack for resolving cases appropriately, and when possible, for my clients.. I am, at heart and fundamentally, a keen and perceptive listener, zealous and compassionate advocate, and strategic problem solver. I use these skills and my social skills, awareness, and. personality, to persuade planning boards, judges, juries, adversaries, and so on, as I navigate various factual and legal landscapes on behalf of my clients.. I frequently present as a panelist or moderator on various legal topics and issues at CLE events and attorney practitioner conventions.. When I’m not strategizing on a case or nerding out on various legal topics, you’ll find me singing karaoke and/or spending time with friends and family, or smoking some type of meat and enjoying a cigar.. You're welcome to contact me to chat about your legal issue.

I have always enjoyed the challenges of math and other technical training.  That love of precision has directed me towards obtaining a Masters of Law (LLM) in Tax with a focus in Estate Planning from the University of Alabama.  This specialized training has helped me to catch major mistakes that many attorneys who dabble in Estate Planning are drafting into the Trust documents that they are providing to their clients.  Often, the attorney themselves is unaware of the errors that they are drafting.. My love of advanced training has also lead me to obtain certification in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests from the NHTSA, which is the DUI training program that police officers receive at the police academies.  After learning the "inside secrets" to DUI investigations and arrests, I followed up my DUI training to become accredited as an Instructor for Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

I am a Virginia trial lawyer who provides a diverse range of legal services, including criminal jury trials, in several counties, including Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William, Spotsylvania, Culpeper, and Fredericksburg. Please refer to the AVVO Q&A section to read some of my 15,500 legal answers.. The main reason I became a lawyer was that I didn’t see much diversity in the legal profession, and I thought the lawyers I hired for my life events, did not understand the context or cultural background. Though I tried to find other lawyers, my searches were futile.. I am an immigrant from India who became a US citizen a long time ago. My father, grandfathers, and great grandfathers were farmers owning huge parcels of farmland in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, and accordingly, I studied Agriculture all through PhD and became an Assistant Professor at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India. Later I pursued computer programming in the United States - MS in Information Systems and worked in Siebel CRM at Accenture and SAP FICO at the Customs and Border Protection. Later, I switched to Federal Govt employee status and worked as an Inspector at the Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the Dept of Homeland Security (DHS) in Washington, D.C. My team did audits of the detention centers in Texas. As a DHS OIG inspector, I was also trained in criminal investigations by NCIS' FLETA at Glynco, Georgia.. My first entry in the United States was as a graduate research fellow with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. DEI is a gift and IFPRI is a non-profit institute gifting diverse opportunities to the international PhD students (like me) around the World. I started my career as an Agricultural Economist (India), as a teaching Professor (TNAU), a graduate research fellow (IFPRI) and a DAAD fellow (JLU, PhD) in Germany. Later after publishing a book and marriage, a new married last name and a career in computer coding, and a beautiful daughter, I pursued law school. That means I bring multi-continental, multi-area, and multicultural lawyering to the practice of law.. I received a Rosa Parks Scholarship and studied law at the only public and affordable law school in Washington, D.C., the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. My team won the ABA Client Counseling Competition Championship in Region 3. My team also won the second place at the Nelson Mandela Int'l Negotiations Competition. Some small law schools like mine produce great defenders and change agents.. I encourage people to donate to UDC David A. Clarke School of Law which shapes many African American students, immigrant women and men into fierce defenders and champions. Please check out the free legal clinics offered by UDC law. Firm: Nichols Zauzig

Cassandra Chin is a Partner with Nichols Zauzig and joined the firm in 2001, the first job of her career. Since then, she has become a leader in Virginia family law, earning both the respect of her peers and the gratitude of clients.. Cassandra has built her career on going beyond 100% for every client. As a result, her busy practice is based on referrals – from former clients, other attorneys, judges, even opposing parties. Many people also find and request her after reading the dozens of detailed reviews that her clients share online.. While devoted to her practice, Cassandra is also committed to developing the family law profession. Early on, she got involved with local and state bar associations. Ultimately, she became the youngest person to serve on the Board of Governors for the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section, later becoming Chair. On a national level, she was one of the youngest fellows when she was accepted into the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), after meeting their stringent membership criteria. She is now a 2nd Vice President serving on the organization’s National Executive Committee, as well as Immediate Past President of the AAML Virginia Chapter. For the Prince William County Bar Association, Cassandra served as Co-Chair of the Family Law Committee from 2007 - 2023. Her service to the family law community earned her the Virginia State Bar Family Law Service Award in 2023.. Cassandra knew as early as 10 years old that she wanted to become a lawyer. In fact, she made a pact with her cousin to open and run a law firm together. Even though he is not part of the same firm, her cousin is also a practicing attorney.. Cassandra majored in business at James Madison University and contemplated going into corporate law, but “family law found me,” she says. It was while clerking for Judge Richard Potter that she was drawn to divorce and child custody cases. What was the attraction? “When it comes to cases involving kids, you can really help the family get through a tough time in a way that leaves everyone with respect for one other,” she says.. Family law also appealed to her business background, given the considerable financial aspects involved when dividing marital assets.“I’m very practical and tell clients my true opinion. We look at things from a cost/benefit approach. It’s important they have realistic expectations.”But first and foremost, Ms. Chin helps her clients understand the divorce process in plain English that they can understand. “I recognize divorce is a strange and new experience for most people and really do try to guide my clients through it with that in mind.”. Accepting nothing less than the best from herself and those who work with her is what drives Cassandra to excel. “If I’m going to do something, it’s going to be done to the best of my ability…plus. I have certain expectations for my work product, and I have to meet my own expectations.”
