I am a co-founder of Martin & Helms, P.C., in Huntsville, Alabama. Born and raised in Decatur, Alabama, I obtained my undergraduate degree in finance at the University of Alabama in 1992 and graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1995.. Since 1995, I have concentrated my practice on representing individuals and the families of individuals who have been harmed or injured as a result of the wrongful acts of others. In recognition of my work in this area, I was selected as a member of the Plaintiff's Steering Committee for In Re: Oral Sodium Phosphate Solution - Based Products Liability Litigation, Multi-District Litigation 2066, and served as the Chair of the American Association of Justice's Oral Sodium Phosphate Litigation Group.. Additionally, I participated in the Trial Lawyers Care pro bono project which provided legal representation for victims making claims with the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund of 2001. I serve on the Board of Directors for United Cerebral Palsy of Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley. I have also served as a founder and chair of UCP of Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley's Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge Run Fundraiser. I currently serve on the Board of Bar Commissioners for the Alabama State Bar.. My wife, Kim, and I are the proud parents of two girls. Professional Background:After finishing my law degree, I went into practice for myself for several years, eventually forming a small firm. During this time I made many court appearances, trying cases in the General District Court, Circuit Court, Virginia Court of Appeals, State Corporation Commission, United States Equal Opportunity Commission, Social Security Administration and more. At Davis Law Group, I focus on family law as well as employment law. I am a life long resident of Northwest Indiana with strong ties to the community.  Growing up in Gary and Merrillville, I graduated from Andrean High School in 1980.  I then attended Indian University in Bloomington and graduated in 1984 from the Business School with a BS in Finance.  Indiana University is also where I obtained my law degree, graduting in 1987.. I grew up around small businesses. One of my grandfathers was an insurance agent in Denton. My other set of grandparents owned a bookstore in Irving. My father ran a financial services company in north Dallas with about ten employees, and during high school I often worked in his office after classes. I spent my summers working on commercial construction sites and watching how each contractor depended on the others to perform their obligations.At Stanford I majored in economics, in part because of its importance to business. But for me the real draw was the way in which economics approaches decision making: How do you balance expected costs and benefits to get the best possible outcome when the future is not entirely clear? This is the same way that I approach life, including litigation.For over three decades, since completing law school at UT Austin, I have assisted business clients in a wide variety of situations including breach of contract; misrepresentation and fraud; transactions and investments; disputes with vendors, customers, and construction contractors; tenant evictions; repossessions, foreclosures, and collections; trade secrets; covenants not to compete; misappropriation of business opportunities; embezzlement by managers; disputes over business ownership and control; enforcement actions by government regulators; negotiating and drafting contracts for real estate sales, businesses acquisitions, and large financial transactions; and setting up new companies.
