I was raised by a hard-working single mother. I have experienced the difficulties of growing up in a single-parent household and I know how it feels to be a child at issue in a custody case. Former Judge Laura A. Devan attended Lafayette College in Pennsylvania where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors with a BA in History and French. She received her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. While in law school, Judge Devan volunteered with the Orange-Durham Coalition for Battered Women and the UNC Law Domestic Violence Project. She was a research assistant for Professor Patricia Bryan and interned at Atlanta Legal Aid Society in Georgia.. Her long term goal of doing poverty-impact work was realized with her first job at East Central Community Legal Services where she worked in the areas of housing and education law. Judge Devan moved to Fayetteville in 1995 where she went into private practice specializing in the area of Family Law and continued her nonprofit work. She has served on the Dogwood Festival Committee, the Cape Fear Regional Theater Board, in the Junior League of Fayetteville, and was a founding member of the Women’s Giving Circle. She currently serves on the boards of Better Health of Cumberland County, the Child Advocacy Center, and Fayetteville Animal Protection Society. Laura previously served as a Commissioner on the State Rules Review Commission, on the State Criminal Justice Partnership Board and on the Local Domestic Relations Steering Committee for Family Court.. In 2008, Laura was appointed by Governor Easley to a newly created 10th District Court Judgeship in Cumberland County. She won a contested election in 2008 and ran unopposed in 2012. In her free time, Laura enjoys her volunteer work, and is an avid runner who loves competing in races. Margit grew up in Fayetteville, the daughter of a military service member. Her father was a retired veteran who served in World War II and both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Her mother is from Moravia, but became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1953. Margit graduated from Terry Sanford High School where she and her twin sister hold the record for winning the State’s Tennis Doubles Championship for four years in a row. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art History from UNC-Chapel Hill and her Master’s of Science in Government from Campbell University. She received her law degree from Campbell University Law School in 1990.Margit’s legal career began with Blackwell, Luedeke & Strickland where she primarily practiced in the area of family law. She established her own law firm in 2001. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Cumberland County Bar Association and a member of the 12th Judicial District Bar Association. She was recently appointed to the Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the North Carolina State Bar. She is an active member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish, serving on several committees.

I am a North Carolina native who was raised in the Grantham community (a rural, farming community south of Goldsboro in Wayne County, North Carolina). Following high school, I attended the University of North Carolina, and after graduating from UNC, I moved to South Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law.. Jessica Flowers began her passion for the law as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Legal Services in Lawrence, Massachusetts. While also working full-time for the Boston Red Sox, she assisted the homeless population in applying for food stamps and obtaining other benefits. She graduated from New England School of Law magna cum laude and served in the United States Army as a JAG Attorney. She took every opportunity to learn and grow in her practice while she was there.
