Gina focuses on civil rights cases, specifically on police discrimination. She also works on all kinds of criminal cases, from harassment to murder. She is passionate about fighting for her clients. She can help to make things right if you have bene injured or treated unfairly. She cares about her clients and will do her best to make sure your interests are protected. Gina is experienced with criminal defense (both state and federal), appeals, postconviction relief, and personal injury cases.. Examples of Gina's results:. • Civil rights lawsuit settlement: Gina settled a civil rights lawsuit for $75,000 on behalf of two African-American men who were wrongfully stopped by Des Moines Police. • Dismissed case: A Polk County judge dismissed a criminal charge against an African American man represented by Gina. The judge agreed with Gina that the man should never have been approached by police to begin with, and so the police had violated the man’s constitutional rights. • Not guilty verdict: A Polk County jury deliberated for only 15 minutes before finding Gina’s client Keilon Hill NOT GUILTY of harassment of a public official. Mr. Hill was canvassing for a political candidate in West Des Moines when a local resident reported him as a “suspicious person.” Mr. Hill repeatedly asked the responding officer if he had broken any laws and received no answer. The officer arrested Mr. Hill after Mr. Hill asked the officer to leave him alone and walked away. The jury agreed with Gina that asserting your right to be left alone is not a crime. • Murder conviction overturned: Gina represented a young woman who was convicted of killing her toddler and was serving a life sentence. Gina convinced the judge to overturn the 1st degree murder conviction and order a new trial for the client. The judge granted a new trial because Gina was able to establish that the client’s trial attorney made several serious errors at the client’s first trial.

If you are facing federal or state criminal charges you deserve your best defense.. Choosing a lawyer is a big deal. Your liberty is in our hands. Whether you have been caught in a bad circumstance or made a series of bad decisions, I have seen it before and you don’t have to face it alone. I will put my experience of representing thousands of people in state and federal criminal court to work for you and I intend to get you the best possible result.. When I worked at the Federal Public Defender’s Office while in law school at the University of Iowa, I had the realization that no matter the crime, everyone deserves a skilled, intelligent advocate working tirelessly to give them their best defense. If I were charged with a crime I would expect that, so why shouldn’t you? I believe that every person deserves the best possible defense. You are probably nervous, worried, scared and likely angry. That is natural. You want someone to deal with the problem and help you get the best outcome. That’s where I come in.. After my summers in the Federal Defender Office in San Francisco and the Federal Defender Office in Des Moines, I became an Assistant Public Defender in Tampa, FL. For the last several years I have been in private practice. I’ve represented thousands of clients facing charges ranging from simple assault to complex federal drug conspiracies to sexual assault, burglary, robbery and beyond. I’ve taken many of those clients to jury and bench trials. I have also argued some of their cases before the Iowa Supreme Court and Iowa Court of Appeals. It is likely that I have handled a case not unlike yours.. WHAT TO EXPECTWhen I represent you, you can expect me to: communicate, counsel and advocate.. Communication. Communication is the key to any good relationship. Yes, I am busy. It is my intention to return phone calls and emails as quickly as possible. I also make it a priority to explain issues in your case and break them down so you understand them. Let’s face it, the law isn’t simple or easy (that’s why I went to law school) and that is why I am here.. Counsel. They don’t call us counselors for nothing. I am a straight shooter. I’m going to give you the most well reasoned advice I can give, even if you dislike it. I often counsel clients about steps they can take while their case is pending–to better themselves and their case. My job is to counsel you to the best outcome, whatever that may be.. Advocate. My job is to dig into your case and make sure no stone is left unturned. No record left unsubpoenaed. No motion left unfiled. Getting great plea deals, winning motions to suppress and getting cases dismissed requires creativity, skill and ingenuity in the approach to your defense.  This becomes particularly important in trial or if I need to take your case before the Iowa Supreme Court.. Choosing a lawyer is a big deal. Your liberty is in our hands. It can be an overwhelming experience. While I cannot promise you what the outcome of your case will be, I can promise that I will put my experience and dedication to work for you.  I look forward to your call!

After completing college at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and attending law school at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Dean studied for, took, and passed the Iowa bar exam, moved to Washington, D.C., and then studied for, took and passed the Pennsylvania bar exam in Philadelphia. From 1989-1990 Mr. Stowers worked in the Office of General Counsel as a counselor to the United States Sentencing Commission, the agency that promulgates the Federal Sentencing Guidelines used in federal sentencing.. In 1990 Dean returned to work in criminal defense at The Rosenberg Law Firm where he had clerked during law school and developed an interest in criminal defense. Over the next several years, Dean worked with and mentored under Raymond Rosenberg, Paul Rosenberg, and Dan Jacobi. Raymond Rosenberg, with whom Dean practiced until he retired in 2005, was widely regarded throughout the last quarter century of his career as the best criminal defense lawyer in Iowa. Paul Rosenberg, now in sole practice has achieved tremendous results in some very high profile cases. Dan Jacobi left private practice and is now General Counsel at Pioneer Hybrid. Dean has secured not guilty verdicts in more than 70% of those trials, including one streak of four consecutive federal jury trial acquittals. Dean has tried some of the longest-running and most complex criminal jury trials in the history of Iowa federal courts.. Although Dean greatly enjoys jury trials, he is also a believer in the value of effective pretrial motions, including motions to suppress unlawfully obtained evidence. For every favorable jury verdict that Dean has secured for his clients, there are many more cases dismissed or disposed of quietly as a result of successful pretrial motions and advocacy.. Dean is a fighter who stands by his clients against some of the longest odds, including through appellate review. Dean takes pride in handling appeals from his own unsuccessful trial or sentencing outcomes and has attained numerous reversals in noteworthy and precedent-setting cases.. Dean is known as an aggressive, outspoken, and highly-effective advocate who shows up prepared and ready to achieve the very best possible outcome for his clients. Dean has developed techniques for case organization and preparation not known to be employed by other attorneys. These methods give Dean the organizational and informational edge to know a case better than anyone else involved
