In addition, I am the firm’s resident adventure seeker, for I enjoy hiking Adirondack high peaks, riding roller coasters, extreme skiing, rock climbing, skydiving, whitewater rafting and high altitude mountaineering.  I have traveled the Amazon rain forest, rafted some of the Northeast's most aggressive whitewater rapids, scuba-dived the Caribbean, hang glided over Europe, hiked the Swiss Alps, skied Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range, traversed the glaciers of Mont-Blanc in Chamonix France, and participated in a guided expedition on Mount Rainier. I have most recently returned from a rock climbing trip to Moab, Utah and anxiously await my next adventure.

Derrick assisted potential new clients with any preliminary legal inquiries they had and provided them with the appropriate guidance.. Born in Galway, Ireland, Tom attended the National University of Ireland where he received his BA in Economics and Law. He was employed with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin and then with the Department of Defense, Operations and Civilian Employee Bureaus in Galway. Tom received his law degree from the National University of Ireland and was awarded the Sweet and Maxwell Law prize for first place in the study of law. After graduating from Law School , Tom moved to New York and worked in the Office of the District Attorney in Brooklyn , prosecuting serious crimes including narcotics and gang violence. Thereafter, he entered private practice focusing on Criminal and Civil Litigation, including Family Court, Surrogates Court, Criminal Court, Housing Court , Civil Court and Supreme Court cases. In 2004, Tom became a DWI prosecutor for Delaware County. Most recently, as Bureau Chief in the Special Victims Unit in Rensselaer County, Tom regularly handled felony and misdemeanor sex crimes, domestic violence, crimes against children and crimes against the elderly. In addition to his work at the offices of the District Attorney, Tom joined the New York State Assembly Minority staff as an associate counsel and later became Deputy Legislative Director.. Tom is often called upon by local and national news organizations to comment on prominent criminal cases.  He has been called upon as an expert in both the political and legal fields for Fox News, Capital News 9, News Channel 10, as well as National Public Radio (NPR) and WGY, making numerous appearances on the Al Roney Show as well as The Tully Rinckey Legal Power Hour.

My practice focuses on defending the rights of the accused and those suffering from physical or business related injuries.  I have tried and argued cases in New York State Trial and Appellate Courts, as well as New York Federal Courts including the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.. As a former Assistant District Attorney and State Assistant Attorney General, I utilize my prior experience and success litigating on behalf of the government to zealously advocate for my clients in criminal and civil matters throughout the State of New York.. As a felony prosecutor, I tried numerous cases to verdict while assigned to the Special Victims Unit.
