He graduated from Baylor University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and with a Juris Doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law in 1994. From December 1994 to December 1995, Gerald began his career as a staff attorney for the Heart of Texas Legal Aid where he handled divorces and custody cases. From January 1995 to September 1999, Gerald worked for the law firm of Reyna & Reyna, P. C. as an associate attorney. While at Reyna & Reyna, P. C., Gerald handled cases involving family law, criminal law and civil litigation. In October 1999, Gerald started his own law firm wherein he continued to handle cases involving family law, criminal law and civil litigation. In 2008, Gerald merged the Villarrial Law Firm into the Zimmerman Law Firm and handled personal injury cases until March 2011. In April 2011, Gerald returned to solo practice and continued to practice law until joining the Dunnam & Dunnam, L.L.P. law firm as a partner.
