Why a lawyer?  This is a common question that I get from friends, family and even my kids.  For me it came when I was in college.  At the very mature age of 18 (insert sarcasm), I knew I was interested in the law and that’s about it.  I grew up watching my parents go to work every day with dread.  They worked hard and took pride in their work, but they were never excited about what they were doing.  My mom told me about this concept of never working a day in your life if you liked what you did.  Sign me up for that!  I considered becoming a police officer; however, when I learned that fighting was commonplace, I abandoned that idea.  I’ll talk and argue all day long, but I’m not signing up for a sucker punch to the face.  If you just stand back and think about what police officers do, it’s pretty amazing.  When others run away from gun fire, they run towards it.  To many peoples’ surprise, it actually was a negative encounter with a dishonest police officer that sent me to law school.  I oftentimes say, “There’s nothing better than a good cop and nothing worse than a bad one.”  I have yet to hear someone disagree.  I have been a lawyer since 2006.  Lawyers typically meet people when they are going through hard times.  One thing that I can offer is The Golden Rule.  At least that is what it was called when I was young.  “Treat others the way you want to be treated;” I can hear my mom saying now. I have found that using my knowledge, abilities and experience to help good people going through hard times has given me that thing I wanted as a not-so-mature 18-year-old - “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.”

Firm: Bruntrager & Billings, P.C.

Despite its demanding nature, trial work is one of the things Daniel Bruntrager likes best about practicing law. Trial advocacy is also an area in which his firm, Bruntrager & Billings, excels. "We have a great group of results-oriented trial lawyers. We are dedicated to working hard, and we give our all to our clients," Bruntrager explains.. Bruntrager has been in practice for more than 25 years. After receiving undergraduate degrees in History and English from Saint Louis University in 1982, he attended the Saint Louis University School of Law, graduating in 1985. Then, like almost every attorney at Bruntrager & Billings, he began his legal career in the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, the chief prosecutor of state-level crimes in the city of St. Louis.. During his four-year tenure with the office, Bruntrager handled a variety of felony and misdemeanor cases, including the prosecution of one of the two men who held up a National Supermarket in 1987, killing five employees and wounding two others. In 1990, after prosecuting more than 70 jury trials to verdict, Bruntrager left the circuit attorney's office and joined the firm.. Bruntrager's private practice includes several types of civil litigation involving individuals. He also represents local and municipal governments, school districts and fire districts in an array of matters, including contract negotiations and employment issues.. One of Bruntrager's recent notable cases was Orf Construction, Inc. v. Black Jack Fire Protection District , 239 S.W.3d 685, 686 (Mo. App. E.D. 2007). Bruntrager represented the fire protection district in a dispute with a general contractor over a void contract.. Bruntrager, who also handles plaintiff personal injury cases, is pleased to have been able to help injured victims and their families recover multimillion-dollar settlements on several occasions. The cases have ranged from car crashes in which seat belts failed, leading to serious injuries, to the recovery of $6 million for the family of a man who drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool that lacked important safety equipment.. When a record store owner's insurance claim was denied after his building collapsed, Bruntrager sued the property's insurer, which had made its decision to deny the claim in just 15 minutes, for vexatious refusal to pay. A jury awarded the store owner his actual damages, plus attorney's fees and damages for vexatious refusal.. Bruntrager also continues to practice in the criminal defense arena, regularly handling high-profile matters. When several Palestinian men were tried in a federal arson case, Bruntrager's client was the only defendant who was not convicted.

I have spent a large portion of my life serving the public.  From my extensive community service during college, to the three months I spent working at a legal aid clinic in South Africa, to my volunteer positions at the St Louis City and County Public Defender's offices, I have repeatedly demonstrated my commitment to giving voice to the rights of the underrepresented in our community.  I would love the opportunity to give you a voice in court. The choice of an attorney is an important decision and should not be based on advertisements alone.
