For much of my professional life, I was a newspaper journalist in St. Louis and in California, serving as the public's watchdog of government and the courts. After earning my law degree, I worked for the Missouri Public Defender System, fighting for the rights of my indigent clients in some of the state's poorest counties.

He is a former State Representative who served as the Chairman of the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee. He also was appointed Judge Pro Tempore by the Louisiana Supreme Court and presided over the criminal and civil court docket for Division D of the 24th Judicial District Court. He also served as a Gretna City Councilman and as interim Councilman for Jefferson Parish..
