Need a criminal law specialist? Most lawyers are not certified as criminal law specialists, even if they only practice criminal law. Stephen G. Cobb is certified.. Stephen G. Cobb is the only certified criminal trial lawyer in a three county area. He has practiced criminal law exclusively since 1990 and opened his own firm in 1997. In 2002, he became certified in criminal trial law by the Florida Bar, purusant to the Rules of the Florida Supreme Court and administered by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Education and Specialization. Board Certification is what the legal profession uses to rate lawyers in Florida. Less than 1% of the lawyers in Florida are officially Bar Certified as specialists in criminal law, and almost 90% of lawyers attempting to pass the certification exam the last time it was given, failed. If speaking with an attorney about a criminal case, the first question you should ask before scheduing an appointment is very simple: are you certified as a specialist in criminal law?
