I am a lifelong Alaskan, married for to the same woman for 44 years, have 2 adult children and two grandchildren. I grew up in Southeast Alaska where I worked as a fisherman and logger before becoming a lawyer. These experiences help me understand the very real problems my clients face regularly.. Over the last 44 years, I have represented clients before all the courts in Alaska; State District Courts,  Superior Courts and the Alaska Supreme Court, as well the United State District Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  I also practice before the Alaska Worker'sCompensation Board. In addition, I am admitted to practice before the United State Supreme Court and the United States Claims Court, both of which are located in Washington, DC.

For the last 25 years, I have represented individuals across the State of Florida charged with various charges including Felonies, Misdemeanors, DUI, Juvenile, and traffic offenses.   I primarily serve the South Florida area including Fort Lauderdale (Broward County), West Palm Beach (Palm Beach County) and Miami (Miami-Dade County).  As an experienced Florida Criminal Defense Attorney, I understand that any criminal allegation of illegal or unlawful activity can have a devastating effect on your reputation, your livelihood and overall well-being. I was born in Westhampton, New York in 1953.  I have lived most of my life in South Florida.   I graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1978.  I reside in Davie, Florida.  My twin brother, Peter, and I practice law together in Plantation, Florida.

Mr. Cleveland received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with honors from Dallas Baptist University while serving with the Dallas County Constable's Office. He attained the certification of Master Peace Officer in 1993, the first year that the certification was created. Mr. Cleveland was a Criminal Justice Honoree scholar and member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. During his sixteen-year law enforcement career, Mr. Cleveland distinguished himself in the area of organized and financial criminal investigations while working in cooperation with other state and federal law enforcement organizations. Mr. Cleveland received his Juris Doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law where he participated in both Moot Court and Mock Trial honors programs. He was accepted into Phi Delta Phi honors fraternity and was later elected as Magister (president) of Elliott Inn of that organization.Following law school, Mr. Cleveland was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in Johnson and Somervell Counties where he prosecuted all types of felony offenses with an emphasis on drug crimes. He received special training in and worked on cases involving the civil forfeiture of assets arising out of felony prosecutions , an area he continues to practice in as a defense attorney.Since entering private practice in 1999, Mr. Cleveland has focused his career on felony criminal defense and represents clients accused of offenses ranging from minor property crimes to capital murder. For nearly 30 years, I have been a lawyer, law instructor and continuing legal education provider in Alameda County.. Since graduating from Hastings College of the Law, at University of California in San Francisco in 1980, I have worked in the courts of Alameda County. While still in law school, I started my career as clerk in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office in 1979. The Office honored me by hiring me as Deputy District Attorney in 1981.. Since 1987, for more than twenty years, I have also enjoyed success in private practice, representing individuals, and protecting their Constitutional rights. I have handled thousands of cases on every level and tried over fifty jury trials to verdict.  As a practicing attorney, I am also a businessperson. I know what it means to meet a payroll, sign the front of the checks, and pay taxes. My ties to Oakland and Alameda County run deep, and I have spent much of my life trying to improve our community.. In college I participated in the University’s student discipline court. In law school I was active in moot court competition and in the Hastings College of Advocacy, a continuing legal education program for practicing litigators. As an attorney, I have judged moot court competitions at UC Hastings College of Law, and coached moot court teams at Logan High School in Union City.. Great Western Savings, 58 Cal. 770 (1976), one of the first cases to interpret the Unruh Civil Rights Act.. Michael Maroko was lead counsel in the California Supreme Court on behalf of Robin Tyler, et al in the In Re Marriage Cases 43 747 (2008) which held that California law limiting marriage to heterosexual couples was unconstitutional and ordered the State of California to license same sex marriages.. Michael Maroko was also lead counsel in the California Supreme Court case of Tyler et al v State of California, California Supreme Court Case No. S168066, challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8 which amended the California Constitution to ban same sex marriage.. In addition, Mr. Maroko was lead counsel in the California Supreme Court case of In re Marriage of Burgess, 13 C4th 25 (1996), which set forth new guidelines for custody/move-away orders, and White v. Marciano, 190 C.A. 3d 1026 (1987), which dealt with child support payments of high-income earners.. Mr. Maroko has also been lead attorney in numerous successful civil and personal injury cases.. Every year since 2004 Mr. Maroko has been named a Southern California "SuperLawyer" by Law & Politics and Los Angeles Magazine..
