As a seasoned attorney with eighteen years of legal experience, I am comfortable in the courtroom and the boardroom. I became an attorney in order to help people and to bring quality, affordable legal representation to individuals and businesses alike. Everyone deserves a zealous advocate who is willing to fight relentlessly to achieve the best results for their circumstances. I will be that advocate for you.. I am a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn. I attended the City University of New York’s John Jay College for undergraduate studies and I graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in May, 1997. After law school I clerked for the Honorable Bonita J. Dancy at the Circuit Court for Baltimore City before joining the State of Maryland Office of the Public Defender in September, 1998. At the Public Defender’s office I represented hundreds of indigent juveniles and adults charged with criminal offenses ranging from DUI and other traffic offenses to robbery, carjacking and murder.. After leaving the Public Defender’s office, I entered the private practice of law where I handled white-collar criminal defense and personal injury cases, including excessive force cases filed under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. While in private practice I represented one of the first individuals charged with a criminal offense in connection with the theft of millions of dollars by officials of the Baltimore City Public Schools.. I joined the Baltimore City Solicitor’s Office in 2004. There I litigated complex civil matters in the local and federal courts, including construction negligence and police excessive force cases. While employed at the Solicitor’s office, I served as a Board Assistant on the Maryland State Board of Law Examiners where I actually wrote the Bar Exam. From 2005 – 2008, I wrote essay questions which appeared on the Maryland Bar Examination and the Practicing Attorney’s Bar Examination. I also assisted in crafting the Board’s analysis of the answers to bar essay questions and graded completed exams.. After leaving the Baltimore City Solicitor’s office, I served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. In that capacity I litigated complex employment discrimination and constitutional claims in defense of the District of Columbia government. I was promoted to Chief of Civil Litigation Section II at the Office of the Attorney General in 2011 and held that position until September of 2015. I managed a team of up to eleven attorneys, four paralegals, and an administrative assistant and supervised over two hundred cases, including complex employment discrimination matters, whistleblower protection act cases, police excessive force cases, Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act cases, and other constitutional matters.. In addition to teaching a course where I help law school graduates acquire the skills needed to pass the Maryland Bar Exam, I have taught at the National Association of Attorney’s General Training and Research Institute and a Trial Advocacy course at Georgetown Law School for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.. “Mere access to the courthouse doors does not, by itself, assure a proper functioning of the adversary process.” –Thurgood Marshall. I believe everyone is entitled to the highest level of legal representation possible. I believe in fighting for my clients to achieve their desired results. And I believe in serving my clients to the best of my ability. Do not attempt to access the courthouse doors without proper legal representation.

I received my B.A. from Middlebury College in 1982 and my master’s degree in 1985. I went on to attend the University of Maryland School of Law, where I received my J.D. in 1989. I began my career in litigation early on in law school, successfully trying civil rights cases in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.. My clerkships with the felony trial unit of the Baltimore City Office of the Public Defender and with the Law Offices of William H. Murphy Jr. gave me the experience I needed to start successfully trying serious criminal matters in both the district and circuit courts immediately after being admitted to the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.. After serving as an assistant public defender in Baltimore for two years, I accepted a position with the Law Office of Roland Walker as a trial attorney handling both criminal and civil matters. In 1995, I was made partner.. Four years later, I began my own law firm, the Law Office of Gil S. Amaral. I have been successfully defending clients’ interests for the last 30 years and I continue to provide the high-quality representation and personal attention that my clients require. My current practice includes serious criminal defense at both the district and circuit courts across the entire state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Additionally, I handle personal injury cases.. I am a proud member in good standing of the State Bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia, as well as the Federal Bar for the District of Maryland. I am also a member of the Maryland Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
Pit bull... the nickname I first received as a prosecutor. I absolutely loved my 10 year tenure at the State's Attorney's Office in Baltimore County; throughout my time as a prosecutor, I learned how to fully prepare AND try cases at the District, Juvenile and Circuit Court levels. My trial experience as an Assistant State's Attorney was invaluable, as I tried everything from a minor driving while suspended to murder... Although I am no longer a prosecutor, I still have the reputation of fighting diligently for my clients. My goal for my clients is to be HONEST, unfortunately a word that infrequently describes attorneys. Retaining my services means that you will be fully prepared for that which is to be expected at trial. I am not a sugar coater. Never has a client and/or his/her family told me after trial that the outcome was unexpected. And let it be known, I don't ever stop fighting for my clients.. While the term "pit bull" has a negative connotation to some, do not be mistaken or assume that I am uncompassionate and nasty. I absolutely love working with my clients and turning a negative situation (let's face it, who wants to be charged with a crime or go to court for a DUI?) into a positive situation.
Facing DUI or other criminal charges can be an embarrassing, terrifying, and an intimidating experience. The arrest, the overwhelming legal process, and emotional drain can make you feel confused and abandoned without any help. I want you to know that you are not alone. I am on your side to protect your rights to the fullest. If you or a loved one is facing charges, you need an expert criminal defense lawyer in your corner who truly cares and will be an aggressive advocate. I will not judge you. Honest and respectable people make mistakes and need help. I concentrate in representing clients in DUI/DWI and criminal defense cases in the Greater Baltimore area and throughout Maryland. I believe that everyone deserves high quality representation. I strive to minimize incarceration, fines, and lifelong irreparable reputation damage. Lastly, my motto is Professional Representation and Affordable Rates.
