George Carter

Firm: Innovista Law PLLC
1200 18th Street, NW , Washington , District of Columbia 20036
Practice Areas: Litigation, Telecommunications, Appeals
I became a lawyer because I wanted to use my strategic abilities to help others solve problems; I remain a lawyer because of the satisfaction of working with clients who are on the cutting edge of innovation and shaping the world around them. And that’s why I founded Innovista Law.. My telecommunications practice has run the gamut, but my most challenging and rewarding work involves competitive carriers that are taking on the established incumbents through new service offerings or business models. I have also defended several companies on class action cases filed under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).  My telecommunications work has taken me across the country and even into foreign nations. These multi-prong disputes often involve challenges in federal and state courts, as well as before the Federal Communications Commission and state regulatory agencies. They require a deep understanding of litigation strategy and regulatory policymaking as well as technical knowledge. I have also helped give voice to competitive carriers on issues of national importance, including representing national trade associations on issues involving the regulation of the open Internet and on access charge reform.. Working with clients that are at the intersection of technology and social innovation to create great positive impact is another area that has always inspired me. In this arena, I have been fortunate to work with the U.S. Department of State on projects in Brazil, to lead a national conference with the Corporation on National and Community Service around technology and social impact, to work with companies that are bringing the innovative broadband services to the most rural parts of our country, and to collaborate with the nation’s leading producer of educational and information television programming to impact lives through technology.. Previous Work. Prior to starting Innovista Law, I was an attorney in the Telecommunications Pracitce Group at Arent Fox.  I have also served as director of programs and general counsel for a social enterprise focused on building the capacity of economically distressed communities and on preparing college students for successful careers as leaders of social sector organizations.

George Walker

Firm: Profit Law Firm
5028 Wisconsin Ave. , Washington , District of Columbia 20016
Practice Areas: Tax
Evolving clients need creative advisors. This approach allows George to provide a high level of expertise on a broad range of tax planning, structuring, and transactional matters.. George helps business owners plan ahead for success and growth, foresee disputes where possible, and compare succession and/or exit strategies throughout the business cycle. For businesses in the startup phase, George advises them through the critical steps of establishing the business, including selecting the appropriate entity type, drafting operating and ownership agreements that reduce risk of future disputes, and hiring employees. This is possible only after carefully ascertaining the client’s objectives, prioritizing their business ventures, and weighing the tax and industry ramifications specific to each client. When advising mature businesses ready to buy or sell all or part of an entity, George is adept at negotiating and structuring taxable and tax-free acquisitions (stock and asset), mergers (stock, cash, etc.), and corporate spin-offs.. As a client’s business transitions, George evaluates each transaction with the client’s financial considerations and long-term plans in mind.. To prepare for transitions in ownership, George analyzes the business’s needs and existing ownership structure, as well as the goals of its current and future owners. He establishes succession and exit strategies for executives and owners, including transitions of ownership to partners, family members, key employees or third parties. With the understanding that a closely held business may be the owner’s most valuable asset, George works seamlessly with the Profit Law Firm’s trusts and estates expert, as well as with the client’s own accountant, to minimize the tax incidence of gifts and bequests through trusts that transfer ownership while generating income. Finally, when commercial disputes arise, George represents clients in negotiations, mediations and arbitrations with a view towards avoiding unnecessary proceedings.. George holds both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Laws in taxation with a focus on domestic and international entities and transactions. George also holds a Master of Laws in international business and dispute resolution (awarded jointly by the Universities of Fribourg, Bern, and Neuchatel in Switzerland) and completed his undergraduate studies with a double-major in International Relations and French Studies. George recently served as Tax Law Fellow (2015-16) for a newly appointed judge on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and was a Higginbotham Fellow (2011) at the American Arbitration Association.

George Lyon

1929 Biltmore St NW , Washington , District of Columbia 20009
Practice Areas: Communications & Media
I've spent 36 years representing clients before the FCC, federal and state courts.  In 2003 I joined with several other DC residents to vindicate our right to keep and bear functional firearms for self-protection.  Since that time I have become deeply immersed in federal and state law regulating firearms and self-defense.  I became an NRA handgun instructor and was certified by the Maryland State Police to teach concealed carry applicants in Maryland.. In 2008 the United States Supreme Court vindicated our rights in the landmark DC v. Heller case.  I then joined with several other DC residents to sue DC for the right to carry a firearm for personal protection.  In July of 2014 the Federal District Court enjoined DC's prohibition on carrying firearms for personal protection.  That case led to the first issuance of concealed carry licenses in DC since 1976.  I was one of the first persons certified by the District of Columbia Police Department to teach concealed carry applicants and have taught approximately one-half of the persons who have been granted carry licenses in the District.. In May of 2015, I joined the law firm of Bergstrom & Taylor to continue to advocate for the rights of gun owners.
