She worked as a newspaper reporter the Topeka Capital-Journal and then did public relations work for a trade association before attending Washburn University Law School from which she was graduated with Dean’s Honors in 1982 and named Outstanding Legal Intern.. She has had her own law practice since 1982 initially doing mostly domestic relations, criminal, juvenile, guardianship and mental illness work. She joined her husband, Mark W. Neis, in law practice in 1984 and formed Neis & Michaux, P.A.. Jill was graduated from Topeka High School in 1973. She married Mark Neis in 1984.
