Franklin was born and raised in Plymouth. He attended Plymouth elementary and middle schools and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, where he was a competitive USSA mogul skier and voted an "All-Conference" baseball player by the Maine Association of Independent Schools Athletic Directors.. Franklin graduated from Bard College, where he double majored in Film and Philosophy and also played on the varsity tennis team. After college, Franklin spent a winter in Telluride, Colorado coaching competitive USSA mogul skiers, before attending the University of Iowa to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree..
