Practicing law has been a long-term goal for me ever since participating in a mock trial exercise in middle school. With that goal in mind, I pursued a degree in political science at Grand Valley State University with the intent of going to law school immediately following my undergraduate studies. I graduated cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law and joined the team at Kraayeveld Law.. I have always had a passion for working with kids. Throughout my time in college and law school, I worked as a high school marching band instructor and as a recreational gymnastics coach. One of my proudest achievements was founding and directing a competitive indoor percussion organization for my students to participate in at a local high school. I formed relationships with each of my students and this allowed me to gain insights into teenagers’ struggles and victories. This experience provides me with a greater understanding of young people’s struggles when the parents divorce. I utilizes my passion for helping kids as a family law attorney by working hard to ensure a positive outcome for children as families navigate divorce and custody proceedings.. As a Grand Rapids native, I strive to make a difference in the community by helping families navigate the legal process during a challenging time in their lives. I have a twin brother and value spending time with my large family. In the summer, I spend my spare time outside with my wife, Michelle and our dog, Zoey. In the winter, you can find me on the ski slopes when I am not in the office.

I have a passion for helping families through difficult times. Prior to my legal career, I worked with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. I was able to gain the compassion and knowledge to help families navigate through a complex system in times of need. Now, I guide clients through a different, yet still complex system - family court.. While working for MDHHS, I was stationed in an elementary school. The families there became “my families” and I took great pride in the simple task of greeting the students at the door every morning with a big smile and a high-five. As an only child I developed an ability to keep myself entertained. My Approach to the Practice of Law. In the simplest terms, an attorney is a problem solver. Specifically, a client comes to the attorney with a problem and seeks the attorney’s assistance in fashioning an outcome that will, from the client’s perspective, solve the problem.. Generally, an attorney’s assistance is required for one of two mains reasons. First, the problem might require a solution that is too complex for a client to solve without the professional and/or legal experience of the attorney.. The second, and far more common reason to seek the assistance of an attorney, is that often times there is an opposing party with the same problems as the client, but with a vastly different idea of what an appropriate outcome should be. When this occurs, I must then persuade the opposing party or a judge that the outcome my client seeks is the most just. This requires a good sense of pragmatism, as well as legal knowledge and ability.. While many people say that they want an attorney that is tough or aggressive, and that will fight for them, they often do not think about what that means. To me, being tough means finding out what my clients wants and not settling for less.. This does not necessarily involve attacking or destroying the opposite party which can have long-term consequences. Often times, such an approach merely results in the parties hating each other, and lawyers making a lot of money. If I can get what my clients want by being nice, then I will be nice. If I must take a case to trial, I will be prepared and put on the best case possible even if it involves presenting facts that the opposite party finds offensive so long as they are relevant and have a bearing on the case.. I never lose sight of the fact that in custody cases, the parties will still be dealing with each other, and their children will still love BOTH of their parents, long after the case has been completed.
