Mike Wilson has devoted his career to protecting his clients, whether those clients have been charged with a crime or have been damaged by either negligence or intentional bad acts. Of note are Mike’s results in the field of criminal appellate and postconviction practice, where he has obtained new trials for clients convicted of serious felonies, including both attempted murder and first-degree murder. As a member of the Nebraska’s Regional Advisory Board for the Midwest Innocence Project, he works to obtain and support the exoneration and release of individuals wrongfully convicted in the Midwest.. Mike earned his B.S. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln before accepting an academic merit scholarship to attend the Michigan State University College of Law, where he graduated in 2005 with Honors. While in law school, Mike served as a law clerk to the Hon. William Whitbeck, Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, and as an Associate Editor of the Michigan State Law Review. Prior to joining the firm, Mike worked as the Executive Director of First Defense Legal Aid and as an appeals attorney at the Chicago branch of the Office of the Illinois State Appellate Defender, where he argued felony appeals before the Illinois Appellate Court.. In late 2009, Mike returned to his hometown of Omaha where he joined the firm of Schaefer Shapiro LLP. There, Mike honed his trial skills and gained experience in civil litigation, including civil rights and injury cases. In addition to winning new trials for clients appealing their felony convictions, Mike regularly obtained favorable results defending against criminal prosecutions at the trial level, including dismissals of drug cases and DUIs following successful motions to suppress evidence.. When he is not working hard for his clients, Mike enjoys coaching soccer and softball, attempting to play golf, and taking down the occasional pot in a friendly poker game.

Michael is originally from Delhi, Iowa, a small town located on the Eastern side of the state 40 miles west of the Illinois border. Michael is the last of four children and only son born to John and Lois Sands. Along with his sisters, Angela, Amy, and Jennifer, he attended Maquoketa Valley High School. While in school, he played football, basketball, track, and golf. During the summer when he wasn’t working construction, he enjoyed boating with his friends on Lake Delhi. After high school, Michael went to The University of Iowa where he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science.. Upon completion of undergraduate school, Michael attended Creighton University to obtain his Juris Doctor and Masters in Business Administration. So despite my love of the courtroom I transitioned my practice to conducting mediations full-time.
