Steven W. Tarta has been providing concentrated Estate Planning and Elder Law services since 1977. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Mr. Tartas' family moved to Ridgewood to permit the children to benefit from the excellent school system. Upon completion of his high school education, Steven attended Alfred University completing a dual major in Business Administration and Economics; Steven graduated Alfred University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Upon completion of college, Steven attended The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois and received a Doctor of Laws Degree in 1971; however, during law school Steven attended and completed his study of International Law at The Peace Palace, at The Hague Academy of International Law in Brussels, Belgium. Steven was accepted as a Judicial Clerk by The Hon. William O'Connor and completed his clerkship at the Ocean County Courthouse. Thereafter, Steven applied for and was accepted as an Assistant County Prosecutor and became a trial attorney for the following five years. After retirement from the Prosecutor's Office, Steven believed he understood the operation of the court system as a result of his Judicial Clerkship and experience in The Prosecutor's Office; at this time Steven entered the private practice of Law. Steven built a very active litigation practice, however, he became increasingly interested in Federal and State Estate Tax Planning and Elder Law, as well as Residential Real Estate and Commercial Real Estate. Also, Steven developed an active Corporate and Business Law practice. Tom concentrates in estate planning and estate administration, counseling families, individuals and business owners in the range of issues surrounding the preservation and transfer of assets during life and upon death. In addition to preparing wills, trust agreements, durable powers of attorney and health care directives, Tom serves clients in trust and estate administration (including related income and death tax issues), probate, beneficiary representation, litigation with respect to wills, trusts and related disputes. He assists clients in planning for the disposition of assets in a tax advantaged manner as well as the succession or sale of a family business. Tom’s practice encompasses the representation and counseling of individual and corporate clients in business matters, including the planning, formation and organization of new business ventures.. Tom has been an attorney for over two decades. He is currently the managing member of his own firm and also managed the in-house legal department of a publicly-traded, nationwide financial services provider. Tom has an extensive litigation background in a variety of practice areas, having litigated and tried numerous cases in the state and federal courts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He has served as a court-appointed arbitrator for the New Jersey Superior Court and the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Scranton, Tom earned his law degree from Rutgers University. He was awarded a Certification in Estate Planning and Master of Laws in Taxation from Temple University. Tom is admitted to practice law in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
