Born and raised in the Midwest, I attended Miami University and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science, and a Minor in Entrepreneurship. Following college, I relocated to the Lowcountry in 2010 hoping to make it my permanent home.. I attended the Charleston School of Law and graduated with my Juris Doctorate in 2013. While in law school, I was elected as an Editor for the Federal Courts Law Review. Additionally, I helped found the school’s Trial Advocacy Board and served as one its first executive board members while also competing around the country in mock trial competitions. During law school, I gained vital legal experience working as a Federal Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Karen K. Caldwell in the Eastern District of Kentucky and as a Research Assistant for Law Professor Miller W. Shealy. I perfomed well in school, making Dean’s List and winning CALI awards in his Admiralty Law and Mass Torts Seminar classes.. Following law school, I was admitted to practice law in South Carolina and soon after accepted a position to work as an Assistant Solicitor for Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson in her Charleston office. I started my career as an Assistant Solicitor prosecuting a wide range of misdemeanor and low level felony offenses ranging from property crimes to DUI’s to drug possession. It was during this time that I began honing my trial and litigation skills. After several successful trials as lead counsel while maintaining a high conviction rate, my caseload quickly shifted towards more serious cases. I was elevated to prosecuting primarily violent crime cases including Murder, Armed Robbery, and Felony DUI. I also served as the lead Animal Cruelty Prosecutor for Charleston County. Ted served as lead counsel in several high-profile cases including the Murder of Eric Brantley, the Felony DUI death of nine year old Da’Vieona Hamilton, and the animal cruelty abuse case of Caitlyn The Dog.. In December 2018, I left the Solicitor’s Office to help found Kidd Corvey & Simpson. During my time at the Solicitor’s Office, I took great pride in serving the Charleston community as a trial prosecutor and hope to continue serving while in private practice by helping the injured and those who have lost their way get back on their feet. As former prosecutor and through my trial experience, I know the pitfalls many litigants can find themselves in. I am always available to my clients, and pride myself aggressive by client focused representeation. My practice will primarily focus on Personal Injury, CriminalDefense, DUI Defense, General Litigation, and Family Law.

The best and fullest description of my accomplishments is at our firm's website under the Attorney Profiles section.. That aside, I am a lawyer in Charleston SC and adjunct professor at the Charleston Law School, Unlike most lawyers, I actually try jury trials on a regular basis. I have written five books on evidence and trial procedure. In connection with my suits against car dealers, I was honored as Super Lawyers' Charleston Lawyer of the Year in Banking and Finance. Other honors are:. USC Law School Compleat Lawyer Gold Award. SC Bar Trial and Appellate Advocacy Award. AV Martindale-Hubbell Peer Rating. Super Lawyers. Best Lawyers in America. None of this means that I guarantee your legal matter will be successful. Sometimes the best advice a lawyer can give is to tell you that you have no case, especially before you have run up legal expenses. However, if you do have a good case or claim, I will tell you that also.

I knew at an early age that I wanted to practice law. I didn't know about contract lawyers, patent/trademark lawyers, etc. I only knew about the lawyers I saw on television shows. Trial lawyers who went to court and fought for their clients. That's what I've been doing for 25 years. I take great pleasure in helping people set their lives in order after serious injuries. I regularly try cases and am willing to go the distance for my clients. I continue to attend seminars and trial colleges so I can confidently represent you in court, if necessary.

Dirk has focused his practice on personal injury, wrongful death, and worker's compensation cases since he graduated from law school in 1987. He has owned his own practice since 1991 and has expanded from his main office in Conway to locations in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, Florence, North Charleston, Charleston, and Mt. Pleasant.. Dirk was born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1960. He grew up in Conway. His first job was at the age of 6 as a farmhand on his grandfather's tobacco farm in rural Horry County. At age 9, he purchased his first vehicle when his grandfather sold him a 1960 pickup truck for the amount Dirk earned that week, $28.00. Dirk credits hot humid summer days in the tobacco fields as his inspiration to excel in school and get a good education. He grew up in a house with his parents, Julius and Polly Derrick, and three sisters. His father was a high school teacher and football coach who had been co-captain of the 1957 South Carolina Gamecock football team and drafted by the New York Giants. Coach Derrick was very competitive and his children were raised to compete to win in anything they pursue. Everything was a competition including who could be the most productive in their summertime farming jobs, who could make the best grades in school, and who could win a particular athletic competition. This characteristic probably explains why all four children attended college and participated in college athletics.Dirk earned a football scholarship to Wofford College where he played for four years. After graduating, he coached college football at East Tennessee State University for one year where he met his wife, Michelle Garrity. They were married in 1985, the same year Dirk began law school at the University of South Carolina. He graduated in 1987 and began practicing in Horry County in 1988. Due to early success in the courtroom, Dirk worked his way into a partnership after just three years. In 1991, he left the partnership and established The Derrick Law Firm.. He and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Dakota and Peyton.. Dirk is also very involved with his community. He is a founding member and elder of The Rock, Conway's Community Church which began in 2005 as a ministry for young people, people who have never gone to church, or people who have no interest in attending traditional churches. He is also involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been so since he first attended an FCA Camp in Black Mountain, NC. He has been a member of the Horry County FCA Adult Chapter and has also served on the Coastal Area FCA Board in the past. Dirk also supports the Children's Mentoring Program of Horry County.. **Past results do not guarantee future results but you are guaranteed our best efforts. Reviews come from clients, our community, and other attorneys. Responsible Attorney: Dirk Derrick, 901 Main Street, Conway, SC 29526.**
