Why did you decide to become a lawyer?. As a former death investigator, I frequently saw the devastating consequences of careless behavior.  Too often, victims' families had no idea that medical mistakes were made or how to proceed.  The more I saw this, the more I wanted to help families seek justice.. What did you do before you were a lawyer?. I was trained in forensic anthropology, which is the field that applies knowledge of human skeletal traits to legal questions.  For instance, I learned how to determine the sex, age, and ancestry of skeletal remains.. I applied this training first as a deputy coroner in South Carolina, then as an investigator at the medical examiner's office in Austin, Texas.  In these positions, I learned how to ask questions in interviews, how to scrutinize medical records, and how law enforcement officers approach cases..
