I did not grow up in a military family, but I am often asked that question.  Instead, my father was a college and professional football coach.  I lived in ten (10) states from Mississippi to Washington state to California and New York with many states in between before I was eighteen (18) years old.  Consequently, I appreciate all parts of our great country and the different backgrounds and experiences that people share with me every day.  During my upbringing, I learned to adapt to many different situations.  After all, the Southern culture is much different than California and New York.. I attended many different schools and had great difficulty deciding what I wanted to do when I grew up.  I also really enjoyed athletics and had great dreams to be a professional athlete.  I happened to be living in Buffalo, New York when I graduated from high school and started my college education at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York playing football.  I finished my first degree at the University of Mississippi in English.   I played football at Ole Miss for one (1) year as an ineligible transfer, but during that year I discovered the Greek life and focused on my social life.. After graduating from Ole Miss, the opportunities afforded an English graduate were not appealing to me.  As a result, on the advice of my grandfather and uncle, I enrolled in the accounting program at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee.  Christian Brothers was the only school willing to allow me to complete the requirements for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) exam in a calendar year.  It was a difficult program, but I completed the necessary accounting hours and accepted an associate accountant position with Coopers & Lybrand (n/k/a PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Memphis.. My experience at Coopers & Lybrand was an incredible opportunity to learn about many different businesses and people.  I traveled the United States providing auditing and consulting services to clients.  However, as I worked on initial public offerings for our clients, I realized that the legal side of professional service was more suitable to my interests and professional development.. In 1997, I completed my law school education at the University of Mississippi.  It was a great experience returning to school.  In fact, I enjoyed school so much that I continued in a graduate English program upon my graduation from law school.  I worked in the Dean of Students Office at the University of Mississippi and coordinated sorority rush while pursuing my Masters in English.  It was a great Fall semester until my girlfriend (now wife) told me that I needed to get a real job.. My pursuit of a real job brought us to Nashville.  I have called Nashville and Middle Tennessee home for almost eighteen (18) years.  Our three (3) children keep us running all over town with their many interests.. My law practice has evolved over the years.  I started my legal career defending physicians in medical malpractice cases.  I worked in small litigation firm before making the decision to practice as a sole practitioner in 2003.  I have been asked to represent people in all types of conflict situations including domestic relations, criminal defense, civil and commercial litigation and probate matters.  I also assist people with estate planning and advisory services.  My diverse professional background affords me the ability to share my knowledge with clients by delivering straightforward practical advice and solutions.  I continue to maintain my Tennessee CPA license in addition to my Mississippi law license.  I am still hoping for a case in Oxford during football season.  Due to the nature of my practice, I rarely have a conflict that prevents me from discussing your case and I do not have any insurance or corporate clients to prevent me from providing an honest answer to your question.

I focus my practice on trial litigation and handle a range of cases from criminal defense to complex business and family law cases.  My work ethic anchors the reputation I have earned as an aggressive attorney.  I am committed to quality representation of my clients, whether through contested court proceedings or through mediated solutions out of court.  I maintain an appreciation for the fact that I am guiding individuals through their very personal and often challenging situations.  With the assistance of my staff, managed by my Senior Paralegal Amanda Blankenship, my office is dedicated to helping others through difficult circumstances with appreciation, integrity, and strength to achieve positive results.. The description of “trial attorney” must be supported by actual experience.  A successful trial or pretrial settlement begins with methodical preparation.  I have prepared more than a thousand criminal, civil and family law cases for jury and bench trials that have proceeded to verdict and  I have substantially participated in numerous other criminal and civil jury trials, as lead and co-counsel, which have proceeded to verdict.  I have completed more than a thousand evidentiary and pre-trial hearings, as well as numerous post-trial or post-plea sentencing hearings.. I remain active in the community and in professional organizations.  I am honored to serve as co-chair of the Legislative Committee for TACDL (Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers) developing and implementing strategy for legislative advocacy that will benefit all citizens.  I am humbled to serve my Alma Mater, Cumberland University, as an adjunct professor teaching Constitutional and Criminal Law and hope to use this platform to instill the same ethic of hard work I have used to help people through the practice of law.  It was particularly rewarding to be recognized by Cumberland University with the 2013 Distinguished Young Alumni award, considering the many deserving alumni of that school.  I was appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court to serve as a Hearing Committee Member for the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility and I currently still serve in this capacity.  I have been named Mid-South Super Lawyer’s “Rising Star” for the past two years, an award bestowed on me by a panel of my legal peers.

Megan House

Firm: Megan H. Wilson, Attorney at Law
9040 Garden Arbor Drive , Germantown , Tennessee 38139
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Megan House Wilson, a native Memphian, started her legal career working at a small firm in Memphis handling a variety of matters including landlord-tenant disputes, juvenile court matters, criminal defense and divorces. Megan enjoyed her work but quickly realized her passion was representing individuals entrenched in contested family law matters and in 2016 began focusing on serving clients in the areas of divorce, child custody, child support and post-divorce matters. The gratification Megan obtains from assisting her clients in oftentimes the most difficult time of their lives drives Megan to fiercely advocate for them in Court. Never one to back down from a fight, Megan quickly established herself as a rising star in the Memphis divorce bar regularly going toe to toe with some of Memphis’ so called “divorce sharks” and routinely obtaining favorable results for her clients at trial.. While she relishes the opportunity to take unreasonable litigants and attorneys to trial to achieve her clients’ desired results, Megan understands that protracted litigation sometimes only further fractures the family dynamic, particularly with minor children. Megan also appreciates that contested divorce can become expensive, and for that reason, she prides herself on always working closely with her clients from the outset of the representation to determine their objectives, assess the reasonableness of their goals and likelihood of success and establish a clearly defined game plan for moving forward. While some attorneys in the divorce bar plant unrealistic expectations in their clients’ minds, preying on their emotionally weakened state for their own financial gain, Megan listens closely to her clients and does everything within her power to resolve matters amicably outside of court when possible.. Megan brings the same tenacity and experience to her clients who are charged with criminal offenses and has extensive litigation experience representing individuals charged with misdemeanors and felonies in a variety of criminal defense matters. Being arrested or charged with a criminal act can be a terrifying experience, and Megan understands that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Megan also understands that her clients’ futures can be turned upside down if their cases are not dismissed, favorably resolved or result in acquittals. Megan’s clients come to her not only fearing potential jail time or having a black mark on their criminal records, but also fearing that their jobs may be at stake or potential job opportunities could be jeopardized as a result of the arrest. Understanding that the devil is in the details, Megan thoroughly analyzes her criminal clients’ defenses and works aggressively with state prosecutors to poke holes in their cases and expose “reasonable doubt” to achieve the best results for her clients.

Lisa Gill

Firm: Gill Family Law
6750 Poplar Avenue , Germantown , Tennessee 38138
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Lisa J. Gill is licensed in Mississippi and Tennessee, active in both states, and has successfully represented clients in both states at the trial and appellate levels. She has represented clients in alternative dispute resolution options outside of court including both mediation and arbitration. Prior to becoming licensed as an attorney, she worked as a paralegal providing trial and litigation assistance and assisted in numerous bench and jury trials, both at the state and federal level. She has prior experience in the areas of construction, real estate, business law, and employment law.Her Father was a local electrical estimator and subcontractor. She spent many Saturdays in her youth doing homework in job site trailers and at the local Memphis Builders Exchange (before the days of AutoCAD). Her Father taught her that the difference between good and great is “all in the details.” He could recite entire sections of the NEC from memory and still explain in layman’s terms what it meant without ever once making someone feel less than. She watched him study with many apprentices to help them obtain their master electrician’s license. He acknowledged that getting the details right was powerful and important because it could mean the difference between a safe or unsafe job site or finished job. He defined “servant leader” with his actions. She applies that same passionate dedication and principle to her legal practice. Electricity, like legal issues, are not to be taken lightly. She also inherited her father’s poor taste in puns.Lisa concentrates her practice in all areas of family law, including divorce, child custody/parental issues, child support, termination of parental rights, adoption, paternity and juvenile court matters. Lisa also handles pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements and LGBTQ+ family law. Lisa Gill has a passion for complex case matters, including working with families that have mental health and/or addiction issues, asset protection, business valuation, buy-sell agreements, and complex business entity restructuring and/or addressing “workout” issues. Lisa is a small business owner and was one prior to becoming a lawyer.. Lisa’s first priority is to take complex matters and get right to the heart of it early to develop a strategy for a client’s global resolution. Her second priority is to provide strategic counsel with as much discretion as can be afforded to each client’s unique situation. She has personally experienced divorce. She knows that clients want an attorney that aggressively works to reach resolution while offering counsel in a way that allows clients to maintain their dignity.. As a friend’s father once told her, “you must offer the olive branch but, ready the sword.” She takes that advice to heart. She is results-oriented and efficient. She works to resolve matters through negotiation or mediation when possible while also keeping the case poised for trial if negotiations are unfruitful. That is why she gathers necessary information from her clients from the very outset of the representation. She and her team work to ensure that their clients do not have the added anxiety of preparing at the very last minute or being unprepared should their case proceed to trial. Her very first mentor taught her 20 years ago that “unfortunately, nothing settles a case quite like a trial date.” Personally, she believes that Sun Tzu said it best when he offered “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.” Stil, she has come to accept that she cannot control whether or not the other party acknowledges the truth of that principle. That is why she “offers the olive branch but, readies the sword.”. EducationTHE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS CECIL C. HUMPHREYS SCHOOL OF LAW: Juris DoctorTHE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS: B.P.S, magna cum laude. Margaret Held

Firm: Held Law Firm
1522 Highland Avenue , Knoxville , Tennessee 37916
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Margaret Held has known she wanted to be a lawyer since she was 8 years old, hearing the stories of her grandfather’s practice in Knoxville. "When you decide to become a lawyer when you are a kid, it’s because you want to stick up for the little guy and take down the bully.". As a new attorney, that attitude landed Ms. Held a prestigious Equal Justice Fellowship, awarded by the National Association for Public Interest Law to honor lawyers who make unique contributions in public law. The Fellowship allowed Ms. Held to represent entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations to create and retain jobs in poor neighborhoods. "These folks could not afford corporate counsel," says Ms. Held. "It was great to be a new attorney, working up the legal documents to start a bank, suing the government over its use of economic incentives, and representing welfare moms to start businesses ranging from child-cares to ice cream parlors.". After the fellowship ended, Ms. Held continued her mission by founding Held Law Firm. "The Firm exists to support lawyers who have enough little kid in them to love the fight - who wake up each morning excited to take on the big boys, and who haven’t become cynical about ideals like justice and fair play.". Ms. Held represented India Tracy in her lawsuit against the Union County school system for religious discrimination. She represented Citizens for Police Review in its battle for increased accountability within KPD. She helped the Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network to fight for a living wage for Knoxville workers. She obtained a record-breaking settlement for a Department of Energy whistleblower who reported safety violations in Oak Ridge. She represented KnoxRecall in its drive for increased accountability from Knoxville city lawmakers, and Knox County over abuses within the juvenile detention facility. "I suppose that these sorts of lawsuits haven’t made me many friends in certain circles," laughs Ms. Held. "But they weren’t who I went to law school for anyway.". "But seriously," she continues, "As fun as those cases are, the issues that matter most to real people are much more personal. Law, for regular people, is about your kids, your job, your business, your neighborhood. That’s why we specialize in family law, employment law, and non-profit law." "My best hope is that we will take the mystery out of the legal process for my clients - that they will know how the legal system works, feel like they got sound advice and a good outcome, and know that, win or lose, we fought the good fight for them. Big cases are great, but there’s nothing more satisfying for me than to represent an honest, hard-working person well."

When you hire an attorney, you need one you can actually speak with. All clients have my direct number and email address, so you won't be shuffled off to a paralegal when you need your attorney.  My legal experience is backed up by extensive sales and customer service experience with two of the largest forest products companies in the the world. This work taught me how to assess a client's particular needs and goals, develop solutions, negotiate with difficult parties, and to make persuasive presentations before decision-makers. These skills learned years ago have served me well in my legal career, whether the case calls for informal negotiations, mediation, or trial. The bottom line: I will return your call, I will proactively keep you informed as to the status of your case, I will be prepared, and I will always level with you. I am primarily serving Knox, Blount and Sevier Counties, but happy to discuss other Counties.

Luke Shipley

Firm: Shipley & Swain PLLC
PO Box 20315 , Knoxville , Tennessee 37940
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Growing up in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, Luke learned two things from an early age: that hard work is good for the soul and to enjoy a good challenge. He applied those lessons throughout his high school career at David Crockett High School in Jonesborough, Tennessee and his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee.. In 2009, he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Political Science and Legal Studies from UT Knoxville.. That same year, Luke enrolled at the UT College of Law and began his legal education, the first person in his family to ever attend law school. While in law school, Luke was the first law clerk Judge Bill Swann of Knox County 4th Circuit Court ever hired. While working with Judge Swann Luke learned the ins and outs of family law. Luke also tried cases in the UT Domestic Violence Clinic and was a member of UT's National Trial Team where he honed his trial skills and courtroom presence. His studies focused on practical, hands on litigation skills where his hard work and "never back down" attitude could flourish.. In October 2012, Luke was licensed to practice law in Tennessee and has already begun to make a name for himself in the local courts.. When he isn't doing legal work, Luke is an avid UT football and basketball fan. He enjoys unwinding with some good music, a book, and a little quality time with his cats. He also enjoys a good challenge outside of work as well- Luke is the only legally blind person most people know who is a pistol marksmanship enthusiast.

Lucie Brackin

Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
I practice solely in the area of family law.  I love what I do!

Lori Holyfield

1500 Munford Avenue , Munford , Tennessee 38058
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
My primary motivator is making a difference in the lives of my clients and helping them as they move through transitions in their lives.  Because of the kind of work I do, I get the honor of revealing the light at the end of the tunnel while shepherding people through what may well be one of the most stressful times in their lives.. There is a special place in my heart for children.  I am a mother of three little girls who was primarily raised by my father and stepmother from the age of 8 onward.  This gives me a unique and balanced perspective on parental fitness and creative solutions in the context of custody. My own parents divorced when I was four years old and I was later involved in a years-long custody battle, so I strive to help my clients protect their children throughout the process without compromising each client's goals and desires.. On a personal note, I am happily married with three children.  I am a Christian.  I regularly attend church and I believe love, justice, and grace can all coexist.  I also believe that life is a gift of uncertain duration, and therefore that it should be lived in an unregrettable fashion.
