Lee R. Atterbury was raised in Dodge County, WI.  He attended college at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and obtained a BA degree cum laude majoring in philosophy.  He then attended law school at the University of Wisconsin where he was selected to be on Law Review and where he served as a Note and Comment Editor.  He graduated with his juris doctorate degree in 1974..
