EDUCATION & TRAINING. I earned my law degree from Stanford Law School in 1989, after graduating magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1983.  I am licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and California. I am active in state and local bar associations, am a member of numerous organizations devoted to alternative conflict resolution, and am an avid consumer of continuing legal education programs.  In recent years, I have received extensive additional training in mediation (90+ hours), collaborative law (30+ hours), parenting coordination (40+ hours) and parent education and Adlerian family dynamics (144+ hours).. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE. My professional career began in 1983 as a Correctional Ombudsman in the Connecticut prison system, where I investigated and resolved inmate complaints against the correctional department.  After graduating law school, I joined the litigation department of Washington D.C. law firm Swidler & Berlin, where I handled complex civil and constitutional cases.  After serving as an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School, I opened my own practice in 1995.  I stumbled into family law accidentally, handling my first divorce case for a friend in 1997.  Having found my calling, I have focused exclusively on family matters ever since.  Over the years, my practice has evolved from a conventional litigation-based practice to a negotiation-based practice in which I can focus on allaying conflict and solving problems.

Local Case Examples or Situations

Consider a fictional scenario involving a couple, Jane and Tom, who are navigating a divorce while trying to minimize the emotional impact on their two children. Instead of engaging in a lengthy court battle, they opt for mediation. Working with a skilled mediator, they are able to discuss child custody arrangements, financial support, and property division in a structured environment. This approach allows them to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement, ultimately benefiting their family dynamic.

In another case, a local café owner named Sarah faces a dispute with her landlord over lease terms. The landlord wants to increase the rent significantly, citing rising property values. Rather than escalating the matter to court, Sarah chooses mediation. Through discussions facilitated by a mediation lawyer, both parties negotiate a new lease agreement that maintains Sarah’s budget while ensuring the landlord receives fair compensation.

Typical Lawyer Fees and How They Vary in This ZIP

Mediation lawyer fees in Bethesda generally vary based on factors such as experience, the complexity of the case, and the duration of the mediation sessions. On average, you can expect to pay between $150 to $400 per hour for mediation services. Some lawyers may offer flat-rate packages for specific types of mediation, such as divorce or business disputes, which can range from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on the scope of the work involved.

It’s important for residents to consider not just the fees but also the potential cost savings associated with mediation compared to traditional litigation, which can be significantly more expensive and time-consuming.
