BRITON S. COLLINS is a litigator who provides strategic counsel to individuals, businesses, and local governmental entities looking to resolve their most challenging problems.. Much of Briton’s practice is devoted to construction and real estate litigation, representing general contractors, subcontractors, owners, suppliers, and design professionals in lawsuits and arbitrations involving defect, delay, and scope of work claims, and claims involving nonpayment and the assertion of liens. Borrowing from his experience litigating these disputes, Briton helps his construction industry clients manage their risk by drafting and negotiating effective contracts. Briton is an active member of the Tennessee Association of Construction Counsel and the Tennessee Bar Association’s Construction Law Section, currently serving on the latter’s executive council. In 2018, Briton was chosen by CityView magazine as a “Top Attorney” in construction law.. In addition to construction and real estate litigation, Briton maintains a general civil litigation practice in which he handles all manner of civil cases. He has represented clients in cases ranging from simple breach of contract claims to complex multi-million dollar personal injury claims. In 2017, Briton was selected by Super Lawyers magazine as a Mid-South “Rising Star,” recognizing him as one of Knoxville’s top-rated civil litigators.. Briton also devotes a portion of his practice to representing local governmental entities in a general counsel role. His work in this area involves advising his clients on a range of matters, such as procurement and compliance with Tennessee’s Sunshine laws, as well as prosecuting and defending cases on their behalf as part of his litigation practice. Briton serves as general counsel to one of the region’s largest public utilities.. Outside of his law practice, Briton serves as chairman of the Tennessee Board of Court Reporting and serves on the board of directors of The Arc Knox County, which is a nonprofit organization that provides programs and services for people with intellectual disabilities. Briton is also an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee’s College of Law, teaching pretrial litigation.
