Mr. Calo joined The Bergen County Prosecutor’s office in 1977 where he quickly advanced from general trial attorney to Chief of the Grand Jury Section. He then established The Bergen County Homicide Squad and was Chief of that for eleven years. During that time he investigated hundreds of homicides and suspicious deaths and tried capital and other major homicide cases. Mr. Calo became a recognized expert in applying forensic scientific techniques in investigations and the court room.. In 1983, Mr. Calo was appointed First Assistant Prosecutor, becoming the chief administrative officer of the Prosecutor’s Office. He oversaw a staff of over 200 attorneys, investigations, and clerical employees, continued to direct the Homicide Squad and supervised other specialized squads and investigations, including political corruption, fraud, arson, sex crimes and child abuse and narcotics.. In 1990, Mr. Calo left the Prosecutor’s office for private practice. He became a partner with the firm of Cohn Lifland Pearlman Hermann and Knopf where he concentrated in criminal defense and civil litigation.. In 1992, Mr. Calo became Managing Partner of Calo Agostino in Hackensack, where he practiced for eighteen years.
