He completed his law school education at St. Louis University School of Law. He has actively practiced in Southern Illinois and Missouri since 1990, including a position as Assistant State's Attorney for the Madison County State's Attorney's office. In 2003 he opened Johnston Law Offices, P.C., which is located in his hometown of Edwardsville, Illinois.
