He incessantly watched Sesame Street and practiced, out-loud and in front of the television, how to speak “American” English. It was only when he was able to speak proper “American” that he felt comfortable. Bradley also remembers telling his classmates that he was born in South Africa, to which they asked if he was black — a question Bradley later posed to his parents, wondering if, in fact, he was "African-American.".
