Bradley was born in South Africa and immigrated to the United States when he was 5 years old. He arrived in the U.S. with his parents on the QE2 (Queen Elizabeth II) boat from the UK and distinctly remembers being very self-conscious about his British accent -- so much so that he refused to go to any birthday party with his classmates until he “kicked” his accent. He incessantly watched Sesame Street and practiced, out-loud and in front of the television, how to speak “American” English. It was only when he was able to speak proper “American” that he felt comfortable. Bradley also remembers telling his classmates that he was born in South Africa, to which they asked if he was black — a question Bradley later posed to his parents, wondering if, in fact, he was "African-American.".
