In January 2012, I founded The Law Offices of Lisa Gagliano Bernstein, which is a sole practitioner firm specializing in the fields of real estate, estate planning, probate, and family law. I infuse each case I handle with a solid work ethic, advanced writing skills, practical application of the law and personal client service. My previous practice taught me to aggressively but strategically help clients navigate their way through the legal process and how to efficiently and promptly respond to my clients. My experience allows me to draft, argue, and respond to both simple and complex legal documents. I have a proven ability to produce under tight deadlines and due to my experience in many different fields of law, I'm well-equipped to manage a wide range of matters.. Real Estate:-Represent clients in residential real estate purchases and sales, including review of contract of sale, negotiate inspection issues, determine compliance with contract, assist with lender requirements, evaluate evidence of title, perform title exam, clear title exceptions, and attend closing.. Estate Planning:-Consult with clients to determine estate planning goals, draft living trusts, wills, and powers of attorney, and fund living trusts with real property, stocks, and life insurance.. Probate:-Handle probate court matters, and prepare documents to open, administer and close probate estates.. Family Law:-Draft and present divorce petitions and judgments, negotiate divorce settlements, and appear in court to argue motions to modify child support and other post-judgment divorce issues. I handle related and unrelated adoption actions by drafting and presenting petitions for adoption and judgment orders in court, acquiring consent from biological parent, and obtaining certificates of adoption.
In 2002 I completed an externship with the Cook County Public Defender's Office. At the time I was still attending the John Marshall Law School but I obtained my 711 license which enabled me to represent clients while I was still a law student.. After I graduated from law school and passed the bar exam I immediately went into private criminal defense and I never regreted it. I have always found criminal defense work to be fun and rewarding. My approach to criminal defense starts with an analysis of the allegations in the charging document. I review the discovery and ascertain whether there is sufficient evidence to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. May standard approach is to do a risk reward analysis with my client and help them decide whether they want to go to trial.. My objective is the same in all cases. I aspire to accomplish the goals of my clients.
I recently volunteered as a scoring judge at the Northwest Suburban Bar Association Mock Trial High School competition held at the Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows, IL.
I provide legal counsel to the closely held business owner, family run companies, entrepreneurs, and “Version 2.0”* companies regarding all aspects of their business. My clients vary from emerging entities just getting established to large organizations with complex needs. Typically clients come to me when they are either emerging from the “start-up” phase to "version 2.0" of their business and have outgrown their current attorney or they are simply looking for a firm that is more adapt at today’s faster-paced business environment - one that is agile, adaptable and able to provide work on a scope basis so that there are no “surprise” invoices.. Whether you are just starting out or you are a sophisticated business owner that is focusing on your succession planning so you can transition into retirement, my team uses plain language in our contracts and our communications (so you don't need a J.D. just to talk to us).. Regardless of where your business is today, the real value, the part that makes WPD different, comes from the level interaction, advice and problem solving we provide. That is a result of the in-depth working relationship we maintain. Our clients are not numbers. They are people with businesses and employees and we want to be an integral part of helping them achieve their goals.

I am a firm believer that a person benefits greatly from having interests outside of their work. Those interests can certainly involve people with whom you work, but it is designed for fun and getting together with friends and family. I have a number of interests that I love to do: kayaking nearly every weekend on either the Chicago River or Lake Michigan (depending on the weather of course); cooking; and sewing. A number of lady attorneys that I have worked with over the years fondly say that they learned everything that they know how to do as an attorney from their sewing training and skills. If you can tailor a suit, you can figure out how to manage just about any problem. It is all a matter of standing back and coming up with a plan first!
