I've been a practicing attorney for more than 36 years now. I graduated from the New England School of Law in Boston with my Juris Doctor cum laude and went on to receive my Master of Laws and Letters in American banking Law Studies from Boston University School of Law. I worked for the FDIC as thier primary bankruptcy counsel in the New England area for about 6-1/2 years from 1990 to 1996. In 1995 I received dual Board Certification from the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification (now the American Board of Certification) in both Consumer and Business Bankruptcy Law as separate disciplines. I have been re-certified by the ABC in 2000, 2005 and 2010 since my original certification. I have operated my own boutique law practice since June of 1996 in the Metro-Boston Area representing, Debtors, Creditors and Trustees in Bankruptcy. I have also served as adjunct factulty in courses on Bankruptcy law at Bently University, New England School of Law and Northeastern University Law School, as well as giving seminars on bankruptcy law to Massachusetts District Court Judges and Massachusetts Probate and family Court Judges. Very rencently, I was voted one of the 2023 Lawyers of the Year by the Editorial Board of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, for my work in obtaining a direct appeal to the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals and successfully overturning an adverse bankruptcy court decision that an Internet Payday Lender sponsored by an Indian Tribe was not entitled to claim sovereign immunity from liability arising from a violation of the Automatic Stay and then successully defended that First Circuit decision before the United States Supreme Court in an 8-1 decision.. One of the nicest things that my colleagues and clients have repeatedly told me (and others) is that my approach to bankruptcy practice is very "creative" and that I am able to look at problems using a very much "outside the box" approach, so that even where a client has "dug themselves a hole", I am able to salvage their situation so as to protect their practical interests, not just their technical legal rights. I take great pride in coming up with practical solutions to difficult issues that push the envelope of what is possible, even using something as complex as the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
I'm the Founding/Managing Partner at Salerno Firm focusing my practice on all areas of family law, including high conflict divorce and highly contentious child custody matters. I have successfully litigated child removal requests and international child abduction cases in the Probate and Family Courts and U.S. District Court in Boston. Prior to founding Salerno Firm, I was a Partner/Shareholder at two Boston based firms where I specialized in family law.. During my legal career, I have served as faculty speaking on child custody related issues, including parental alienation, and I worked as a court appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children for six years. I also have experience working with the Department of Children and Family, Guardian Ad Litems, and mental health and substance abuse counselors in custody matters. As a family law Attorney, I understand the emotional and financial difficulty of divorce and custody proceedings and I work hard to settle cases in an amicable manner.. From 2018-2024, I received the Top Attorneys in Massachusetts Rising Starts recognition.

I received my Juris Doctor law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1976 and was admitted to the practice of law in Massachusetts in January 1977. The second case I ever worked on was a workers compensation claim and I have been handling workers compensation claims ever since.. I have handled many other kinds of cases both criminal and civil including personal injury, family law, residential and commercial real estate and contract transactions and administrative hearings on both the state and federal levels. I have tried literally hundreds of cases most of them workers compensation administrative hearings but also other kinds of administrative hearings as well as bench trials and jury trials in the district and superior courts.. My practice since 1980 has been mostly in handling workers compensation claims and for the past 15 years workers compensation claims have been my exclusive practice. That means that unlike most other lawyers who handle workers compensation claims as just one of the many kinds of cases they handle I handle only workers compensation claims day in and day out.. As a result, I am generally immediately aware of changes that often occur in workers compensation law, legal decisions, rules, regulations, practices and procedures.. If you choose me as your attorney you can be confident that your representation will be experienced, expert and up-to-date.. While I do not make house calls I am available by appointment for videoconference via Skype or FaceTime.. You can contact me during regular business hours by telephone at or by email at any time.

My first focus in each case is preparation of a thorough, analytical and practical assessment, working with the client to develop an accurate picture and a strong, sensible strategy for optimal resolution at controlled cost. Each client has personal access to me throughout the representation, but we also have a "deep bench" of support in all relevant areas of legal expertise. My goals are to continue to improve in all aspects of the complicated problem-solving that we do, and to make each client a satisfied continuing member of a mutually beneficial network.. I have practiced law since 1981 and am admitted to the bars of Massachusetts, Florida, and the District of Columbia. For most of my career I was a public defender -- more than ten years as a federal public defender, and another ten years as a state court defender. I also spent four and a half years teaching criminal defense trial practice at Harvard Law School. I have tried all kinds of serious felony cases in both state and federal court. My trials have included rape, murder, burglary, robbery, wire fraud, and conspiracy cases. I am also an experienced appellate lawyer and I have at times represented my clients straight through the appeals process.
I have practiced environmental law for over 30 years. While my practice is mainly focused in Massachusetts, because I have clients with operations located out of state, involving federal law, such as superfund and RCRA, I advise clients on these matters throughout the United States. My work has ranged from negotiating a biomass feedstock agreement for a project in Hawaii, to negotiating superfund settlements for sites located in Louisiana and clean up contracts for sites located in New Jersey and throughout the US. I like to think that my clients are solving environmental problems. Because they are at the interface between environmental problems, the public and business, they face a wide array of issues. My job is to help to navigate that maze in a cost effective, thoughtful and responsible manner. The end result is to produce results for today's businesses and tomorrow's environment. The breadth and depth of my experience is demonstrated by the environmental due diligence I performed on the acquisition by my client of over 50 hazardous waste facilities located in thirty states, resulting in my client becoming the largest hazardous waste company in North America. Most recently my practice has focused on development of renewable energy facilities, ranging for solar projects on landfills to utility scale biomass facilities. I have been very involved with the proposed regulatory changes for the development of anaroebic digestion facilities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I hope to continue to participate in the development of domestic renewable, cleaner energy resources to reduce dependence on foreign oil. In addition, I continue to represent a wide array of clients on superfund, c. 21E, RCRA, solid waste, recycling, environmental review, zoning, clean up contracting and related issues.

I have had success applying an "outside-of-the-box" approach to complex legal problems. In one recent example of this, my firm and I were able to successfully survive a statute of limitations motion to dismiss on grounds that our plaintiff client's claims accrued some fifteen years prior to the time he filed suit. The key was a creative approach to interpreting governing trust language.. In addition, I strive always to show courtesy, kindness, compassion and professionalism to my clients. I return calls and emails promptly.
I have developed my practice over the past three decades, focusing primarily on bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings. I often represent individuals and small businesses, secured and unsecured creditors, committees of creditors, trustees and equity security holders in bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings as well as financial institutions and other lenders in out-of-court loan restructurings, assignments for the benefit of creditors, foreclosures, repossessions, and the sale of distressed assets and businesses.
