Whenever someone asks me where I am from, I respond that I grew up in southeastern North Carolina on dirt road. Folks from the nearby town, Whiteville, which isn’t much bigger, used to say they had to pipe the sunshine into where I lived.. By growing up in a small rural township with economic hardships, I learned so many lessons about the power of community working together to lift one another up—particularly in times of need. In my professional experience, I find that people often seek out a lawyer when they are experiencing some form of suffering and searching for a solution. I believe compassion is the necessary foundation an attorney needs in order to become part of the solution. The power of compassion is a guiding principle in my life and has led me to my professional journey today.. After attending Wake Forest University and earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I decided to attend law school after shadowing my uncle in his law firm for several summers. He had a thriving Social Security Disability practice which I admired and felt comfortable working in that area of the law. Although I had originally intended to work as a District Attorney, I discovered that was not my path. Instead, I accepted the challenge of leading a growing firm’s Social Security Disability practice where I remained at the helm for over 17 years. I feel privileged to have been able to help so many people navigate a very complex appeal process and secure the benefits they had earned.. Now, I am answering a call to continue helping people navigate other difficult and complex areas of the law known as Elder Law. I believe my knowledge, skills, values, and experiences will enable me to help seniors and their families find solutions for some of the most difficult times of life.. When not working, I enjoy exploring our beautiful state and taking photographs of nature and family. I also enjoy singing with my church choir, playing my trumpet and hanging out with my daughter, Ella, and our dog, Tilly.

When I play the gratitude game with my kids, I always list my educational opportunities near the top. Early in life, I learned that often, good things come from difficult experiences. College was like that. I was able to attend The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill because of a scholarship from the N. C. Veteran's Administration. This opportunity would not have been possible except for my father's lifelong disability from service in the U. S. Army Air Corps. I've always been a person serious about life. As an undergraduate studying psychology and religious studies, I enjoyed exploring some of the big, unanswered questions from my childhood: Is there a purpose and meaning to life? If so, how do we find it? Does suffering pay off? What happens after we die? After receiving my B. A. in psychology from UNC, I obtained a Master of Social Work from the  Southern Baptist Theological Seminar in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating, I practiced clinical social work for five years before entering law school at Campbell University. I enjoyed practicing law in Wake County before my thirteen-year career as a court manager in state government. Most recently at the N. C. Administrative Office of the Courts, I worked as the Senior Manager of Court Programs where I supported court programs across the state: family courts, custody mediation, drug courts, domestic violence, and alternative dispute resolution. Like all of us, the formal hats I wear (social worker, lawyer, court administrator) and informal hats (wife, mother, divorceé, sister, friend, daughter) are integrated into all that I do. One reason I decided to return to the practice of family and elder law at this point in my life is so that I can wear the various hats I've collected over the years to help families grow and evolve through some of the tough transitions in life.

My practice is focused on divorce and family law related matters in Wake County.  I approach each case with the goal of helping my client reach a satisfactory resolution in the most efficient and least stressful manner possible.  Whether it is an uncontested divorce, drafting a prenuptial agreement or a separation agreement, negotiating, mediating, or litigating, that goal remains the same.  Many of the cases I handle settle.  Settlement is by far the most efficient and least stressful way to resolve legal matters.  As I tell clients, we can only control our side of the case and, therefore, when settlement is possible, I will work equally hard to litigate their case.

I am an outdoor enthusiast.  Having grown up in Utah and California I spent a lot of time outdoors hiking and biking.  I grew up tinkering on bikes and became a professional level bike mechanic and ultimately worked as a bike mechanic and tech at a Utah bike shop to pay a significant amount of my way through my Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Utah.  As a student at the University of Utah I always had a fascination with new and innovative products and was introduced to the field of patent law, which, in the field of patent prosecution, by definition, involves constant contact and interaction with new and innovative products.  So far my career has provided me with the opportunity to draft patents ranging from robotic systems for defense companies such as Raytheon, to medical devices such as CPAP machines and auto-injectors for epinephrine, as well as software and other mechanical devices.

I am a very simple, hands on attorney and enjoy becoming involved in all my cases, whether big or small.  For me it's about the people and what I can do to make their situation better.  Witnessing how the law can make a difference after a tragedy is what makes me come to work every day.. One of my favorite things about being an attorney is getting to know each client and becoming very hands-on during their case.    I grew up in a small town in Illinois which became the inspiration for the concept of having a law firm with “Lawyers You Can Talk To.”    I try to keep it simple.  I strive to be honest and hardworking much like the folks from my hometown.   When some of those hardworking people need answers to complicated questions, I want to be the person that provides the answers.  I will be the lawyer they can talk to.   I am not intimidating and prefer my clients call me Dan.   I want my clients to feel comfortable with me and be able to talk with me.  They have been through enough given their injuries and should not feel intimated about speaking with their attorney.. I have found many accident victims are denied access to the attorney and are handed off to staff or an investigator.   If they do get to speak with a lawyer, they don't understand a word of what is said and are too intimidated to ask questions.”. I want to advocate for my client and at the end of their case want that client to say with a smile "Dan looked out for me like family."

From the time John was 8 years old, he wanted to be a lawyer. After living in San Francisco and New York, John spent most of his childhood growing up in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Campbell University School of Law. While at Campbell, John was named to two national moot court teams, and the law school's faculty recognized him as one of the nation's best, up-and-coming lawyers. After graduating from Campbell with honors, John initially worked for a law firm that defended claims filed by injured people. After seeing from the inside how insurance companies and big business attempt to work the legal system to maximize their own profits, John quickly realized that accident victims needed a strong and aggressive advocate to stand up and fight for them. So, in 1995, he changed firms and since then, he has focused exclusively on representing people throughout the country who have been injured by trucking collisions, medical negligence, defective products, and on-the-job accidents.. Known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail, one of John's most notable achievements occurred in 2000 when he represented a young mother and her daughter in a case against the State of North Carolina for serious injuries that they suffered when their mini-van was struck head-on by a Department of Transportation dump truck. At that time, a damages cap limited the amount of damages that could be recovered from the State of North Carolina to a maximum of $150,000, which was less than half of the mother's medical bills. Through John's efforts and against considerable odds, he was not only able to persuade the General Assembly to increase the cap to $500,000, but he also instituted ground-breaking lawsuits that resulted in the family recovering a settlement that was more than 10 times the amount initially offered by the State.. John is licensed to practice law in all North Carolina federal and state courts, and he is a very active member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. John devotes a considerable amount of his time to teaching legal concepts and advocacy skills to other attorneys and law students, and his articles are frequently published throughout the State.. In his free time, John coaches a youth basketball team, and he serves as an extraordinary minister, lecturer, and mass coordinator at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh.  He enjoys basketball, softball, running, biking, music, and traveling with his wife, Rebecca.

Firm: McCoppin & Associates Attorneys at Law, P.A.

Andrew McCoppin was headed for a career as a criminal defense attorney even before he finished college at the University of California at Berkeley.  Two key experiences helped shape Mr. McCoppin’s views of the legal system, steering him toward the path that would become his life’s work.. The first experience was the time Mr. McCoppin spent as a law clerk with a public defender’s office.  That opportunity allowed Mr. McCoppin to meet directly with clients who were accused of crimes.  He saw attorneys in action as they developed their clients’ defenses and prepared their cases for trial.  Mr. McCoppin saw first-hand the critically important role criminal defense attorneys play in the American justice system – as advocates for people accused of crime, but who are presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and against whom the full resources of the government are brought to bear.. Mr. McCoppin’s second experience was as a crime victim in a violent hostage situation.  His own words describe the impact the dramatic event had on his life:. After college, Mr. McCoppin attended law school at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. He gained valuable experience working as a student law clerk in city and county public defenders’ offices.  In addition, he was a student law clerk for the California Supreme Court.. Mr. McCoppin worked for a time as an assistant district attorney in Wake County, North Carolina, before committing himself to representing criminal defendants in private practice. In the more than 20 years since, Mr. McCoppin has aggressively and successfully represented people accused of criminal charges ranging from minor traffic violations – he’s helped clients resolve over 10,000 cases – including serious drug offenses, violent crimes, domestic violence, driving under the influence (DWI & DUI); and complex white collar crimes.. He is now board certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a legal specialist in both State Criminal Law and Federal Criminal Law.. Mr. McCoppin’s success on behalf of clients proves the value of his approach in every case, which includes personally representing each client at all stages of the defense, and taking every step necessary to get the results his clients deserve. That means leaving plea bargains as a last resort and preparing every case for trial.
