When I headed off to college in 1962, I had every intention of completing my four years and then becoming a teacher. But it seems life had a very different plan for me.. My vision for the future started to change during my junior year at Arizona State. It was then that I married my high school sweetheart. To build up our savings, I began working full-time and attending school part-time, which put me behind schedule from my original plan. I was alright with the change, though, because working ensured that my lovely new bride could still graduate on time.. After my wife graduated, I went back to school full-time. But just as everything seemed to be getting back on track, another wrench was thrown into the works — I was drafted into the Vietnam War. I had never envisioned myself joining the armed forces, but I chose to embrace the idea by applying to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Air Force. Unfortunately, though, my military examiner deemed that I had “bad feet,” which led to my exclusion from the war.. It was only after my military career was denied that I realized I hadn’t made any backup plans for the future. Fortunately, an opportunity presented itself in the form of Arizona State’s new law school. It was scheduled to open just as I was debating what to do next. With my father’s encouragement, I decided to apply. The rest, as they say, is history.

Stephen has a busy practice in wills, trusts, and probate.. I have been practicing law since 1986.  I started in juvenile law, representing abused and neglected children. I added probate law around the same time, which involved administering decedents' estates, working with adults who were the subjects of guardianship and/or conservatorship proceedings and protecting the interests of minors in connection with conservatorship cases. Whether representing petitioners concerned about the well-being of their loved ones or representing children or disabled adults, working to help bring about positive change and good results for those who are disabled, abused, neglected or unable to protect themselves is fulfilling.. Also, helping people who have lost family and/or loved ones sort through the probate process is something I enjoy doing.  At the end of the day, it's really important to know that I've helped make someone's life a little better, a little less stressful, and a little more successful!. Traveling the world and making music is something I enjoy in my spare time.  I am a singer-songwriter who loves gospel, bossa nova and world music in various languages. My original music won second place in the 2010 Arizona State Bar Creative Arts Competition for lawyers, which was the first and only time I entered the competition.  Looking forward to making more music in 2014!

I enjoy advocating for children and those who don't yet have their own voice.  I often take on Pro Bono cases from the Volunteer Lawyers Project.  They have been some of my most interesting and gratifying cases.  When I'm not practicing law, I enjoy running, reading, kayaking and watching movies with my family.  My oldest daughter and I have taken some Krav Maga classes together and we now have some wicked ninja fighting skills.
