When I headed off to college in 1962, I had every intention of completing my four years and then becoming a teacher. But it seems life had a very different plan for me.. My vision for the future started to change during my junior year at Arizona State. It was then that I married my high school sweetheart. To build up our savings, I began working full-time and attending school part-time, which put me behind schedule from my original plan. I was alright with the change, though, because working ensured that my lovely new bride could still graduate on time.. After my wife graduated, I went back to school full-time. But just as everything seemed to be getting back on track, another wrench was thrown into the works — I was drafted into the Vietnam War. I had never envisioned myself joining the armed forces, but I chose to embrace the idea by applying to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Air Force. Unfortunately, though, my military examiner deemed that I had “bad feet,” which led to my exclusion from the war.. It was only after my military career was denied that I realized I hadn’t made any backup plans for the future. Fortunately, an opportunity presented itself in the form of Arizona State’s new law school. It was scheduled to open just as I was debating what to do next. With my father’s encouragement, I decided to apply. The rest, as they say, is history.

Richard Cruz, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, earned  a B.A. degree with honors in 1995 from the University of California, Irvine. Mr. Cruz earned his J.D. from the Arizona State University School of Law. His law education included trips abroad to Cambridge, England and Geneva, Switzerland. During the pursuit of his educational credentials, Mr. Cruz worked as a clerk for the U.S. District Court, District of Arizona, which set the foundation for his valuable trial skills. In 2003, Mr. Cruz obtained his J.D. from the Arizona State University School of Law. Mr. Cruz continued to enhance his trial skills by successfully completing the Arizona College of Trial Advocacy program offered by The State Bar of Arizona. With over nine years of legal experience, and admittance to the Arizona Supreme Court, the United States District Court, District of Arizona and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit in 2004, Mr. Cruz demonstrates the same knowledge and analytical skills usually witnessed from attorneys with longer tenures.

Joey Hamby is a criminal defense attorney in practice in Arizona since 1994.  Over the years he has personally been counsel of record on hundreds of felony and misdemeanor cases in state and federal courts. I was born in Detroit, and raised in southeastern Michigan and northwestern Ohio, before moving to the desert southwest after graduation from college. I traded winter gray skies, cold and snow for sunshine warmth and annual withering summer heat. I have lived in Arizona since 1976, and graduated law school in 1983.. I am single, with three handsome & intelligent adult sons, and an eight-year old grandson, who keeps me busy trying to keep up with him. I  enjoy an active lifestyle, including: trave to new and interesting places; white-water rafting, camping and stream fishing for trout; playing and watching sports; reading and  talking with people, as I always want to better know and understand our world around us.
