I have practiced law since 1979, with a focus on estate and tax planning for larger estates, complex trust and estate administration matters, charitable organizations and retirement planning.. I am an active member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and currently serve as a member of its Board of Regents and Executive Committee.  I have also served on several college committees and as chair of the Technology in the Practice Committee and as current vice-chair of the Communications Committee.  I am an active member of the Iowa State Bar Association, both in its tax section and the probate and trust law section.  I am a member of the board of directors of the Iowa Academy of Trust and Estate Counsel.

I have over eighteen years of experience litigating complex legal matters. As a litigation attorney for the family law division at Whitfield & Eddy Law Firm, I currently focus my practice on litigating family law matters, including dissolution of marriage, custody, spousal support, domestic abuse, grandparent visitation, guardianship, termination of parental rights and adoption cases.. I received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management with honors from Baylor University in 1996. In 1999, I graduated from Drake University Law School. Shortly after graduation I moved to Dallas and was admitted to the Texas bar. I worked as an Assistant District Attorney with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office prosecuting domestic abuse, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, assault, robbery and felony narcotics cases until 2003 when I left to become a solo practitioner and focus my practice on family law matters in the Juvenile and Family Law Courts. I moved back to Iowa and joined Iowa Legal Aid in 2008 as a staff attorney. I represented victims of domestic violence as part of the Women’s Equal Justice Project and as the Violence Against Women’s Act attorney during my time at Iowa Legal Aid.. It is an honor to practice law and help my clients navigate through extremely difficult circumstances. I graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in 2013 and then clerked for the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa where I assisted judges in researching issues and writing opinions. In December of 2015, I began working at Nelsen and Feitelson. In June of 2018, I began working at Hopkins and Huebner where I maintained a general practice working in criminal defense, civil litigation, family law, and probate.. Prior to going to law school, I attended the University of Miami, Florida and graduated with a double major in journalism and political science. I enjoy spending time with my wife and three dogs.

I currently chair the Firm’s Agricultural Law Practice Group. I came into the practice of law after studying for six years to be a Catholic priest, after which I spent 10 years traveling all over the Unites States and Mexico, to Europe, and to Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and iNdia. During this time, I got to live with people from all walks of life, from poor to rich, and with people of many different religions. While on the road, I was preaching Christianity, but it was a Christianity based on the fact that we are all brothers and isters, of One Family, and that we need to love and care for each other, and for our world in general.. At the end of this 10 years, I went through some expereinces that led directly to my entry into law school. Sicne becoming a lawyer, I have had the privilege of defending many persons, both in immigration court and in criminal court. I have developed a law practice focused on family immigrant and deportation defense, with a specialty in criminal deportatioin defense. I have given many Continuing Legal Education seminars to alwyers on this area of the law for many years.. I was adjusnct professor in immigration law for Drake Law School from 1997 to 2004. our law office also led the response to the big ICE immigraiton raid in Postville in 2008. I continue my law practice here in Iowa, with my focus now bering the reunification of families while continuing to work in the area of immigration deportation. I enjoy my pracitce and my clients. I began my practice at Whitfield & Eddy in 1991. Since that time, my practice has focused on civil trial work, concentrating primarily on product liability defense and insurance coverage and related commercial and construction issues.. I have worked on numerous appellate cases in the Iowa Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.. In addition to writing numerous articles about trial, product liability, and insurance coverage issues, I worked on appellate briefing in the 6th and 10th Circuits and the United States Supreme Court.

I am the chairperson of the Whitfield & Eddy Law Insurance Law Practice Group and my practice primarily consists of defending cases involving claims against individuals, insurance carriers, businesses, and financial institutions.  Throughout my career, I have tried dozens of cases.  I am licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, as well as the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.. Given my level of jury trial experience, I was elected into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), a national invitation-only organization for lawyers requiring significant jury trial experience as a qualification for membership.  I am the Immediate Past President of the Iowa Chapter of ABOTA.  In addition to ABOTA, I am an active member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), a peer-selected organization composed of leaders in the legal defense community who have achieved professional distinction.  I have also been named a Fellow in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, an organization limited to 250 of the most experienced trial lawyers in the State of Iowa.  I am have been rated by Martindale-Hubbell at the AV (highest) level for legal ethics and ability..
