The Blum Firm focuses on advanced estate planning techniques as well as traditional wills, estates, and other planning. I have a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Houston and recieved myJuris Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. My article, Section 2036 of the Interal Revenue Code: A Practitioners Guide,  will be published in the American Bar Association's Real Property, Trust, and Estate Law Journal this spring. Terry Belt arrived in Austin in 1965 from the little German town of Weimar, Texas, where he learned to haul hay bales for the local farmers.  He attended the University of Texas in 1965-1972, where he earned a degree in accounting in 1969 and a Doctors of Jurisprudence from the UT Law School in 1972.. Belt’s desire to become a lawyer was fueled by his summer work in Casper Wyoming for a petroleum abstract title company. While working there, during his high school years, Belt would deliver the completed abstracts to the lawyers for the Oil Companies, and he was impressed that the lawyers always wore cuff links.. After Belt graduated from Law School in Austin, and for the next 43 years, he operated his solo law practice in Austin, except for the two years that he moved his practice to Geneva, Switzerland and then to Paris, France.. He also taught at the University of Texas, and Austin Community College, and to make ends meet while he started his practice, he played a saxophone in a dance band. The saxophone that he used was purchased from B.J. Thomas, of “Rain Drops Keep Falling.” After the first 6 years of working as a lawyer and as a musician, Belt retired his saxophone.. During his 43 years in solo practice, he was an officer, or director of: The Austin Jaycees, the Young Man’s Business League (YMBL), West Austin Rotary, Technology Advisory Group, Westlake Chamber of Commerce, and a cancer charity known as The Smile Never Fades. He also has served on the board of directors for numerous Austin businesses.. During his career, Terry Belt has earned two Texas Supreme Court victories, and was board certified by the State Bar of Texas.. Belt is in good standing with the State Bar of Texas, and he is licensed to practice in all State Courts, The U.S. Supreme Court, and the Federal Western District courts.. He has a weekly radio show known as “ASK THE LAWYER”, and he has participated in numerous speaking engagements for the State Bar of Texas and the Austin Apartment Association.. Belt has been married to Diane Belt for 27 years and has 2 grown children and 4 grandchildren.

Phillip Arendall joined the Texas Trust Law team in 2022 and works with Ann Lumley in the department of After Life Care. Phillip’s legal practice focuses exclusively on Estate and Trust Administration. Before joining Texas Trust Law, he began his career as an immigration attorney, where his primary focus was to assist migrant children find a pathway to citizenship. One of Phillip’s strengths, as someone who has also experienced close family loss, is to meet clients where they are, empathize with them, make the administration process as easy as possible.. Phillip graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. While at the Rawls College of Business, Phillip was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma honor society as top 7% of his class. He then attended Texas Tech University School of Law and graduated with a concentration Business Law. In his final year of Law School, he was also a part of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic that focused on pro-bono representation before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Phillip was honored with top marks for his work in 2020 and his additional work as a leader of the Volunteer Income Taxpayer Clinic in Lubbock, Texas.. Originally from Magnolia, Texas, Phillip traveled to Lubbock for college and moved to Austin in 2020. Phillip is licensed to practice law by the Texas Supreme Court and the New Mexico Supreme Court, and is a member of the Estate Planning and Probate Section of the Austin Bar Association. Phillip loves to spend most of his time volunteering at his local church, and enjoys hiking and playing tennis.

Mr. Swanger is board certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Council, serves as a legal advisor to the Ballet Austin Foundation, and is an active member of various other professional and civic organizations. Mr. Swanger graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1984 after receiving his B.B.A. in Accounting, with highest honors, from The University of Texas at Austin in 1981.

Mr. Scott is a partner of Osborne, Helman, Knebel & Scott, LLP. He focuses his practice on fiduciary litigation, including trust, estate, partnership and guardianship disputes, representing parties on both sides of the docket. Mr. Scott also advises settlors, trustees, protectors, and asset holders in high value disputes related to international trusts and asset protection structures. Additionally, Mr. Scott represents charitable organizations in a wide variety of controversies and has experience in construction and general commercial litigation. Mr. Scott served as law clerk to the Honorable Felix Recio, United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Brownsville Division, before joining Osborne, Helman, Knebel & Deleery. While clerking for Judge Recio, Mr. Scott also acted as adjunct professor of business law at the University of Texas at Brownsville.

Mr. Osborne is the managing partner of Osborne, Helman, Knebel & Scott, LLP.  Mr. Osborne practices primarily in the area of trust and estate planning, with an emphasis on taxation, asset protection, and international transactions.  Mr. Osborne is an author and frequent lecturer on numerous wealth transfer topics.  He has made presentations and published articles nationally and internationally on the subjects of asset protection, foreign tax compliance, international inheritance rights, and related cross-border topics. Mr. Knisely is a partner of Osborne, Helman, Knebel & Scott, LLP.   His practice primarily involves representing individuals and institutions in litigation, controversies, and appeals arising from and involving trusts, estates, wills, probate matters, and guardianships.  Mr. Knisely also handles appeals of all types of civil matters in both state and federal courts, and he has significant experience in insurance matters, general commercial litigation, and in representing charitable organizations in a variety of controversies.  After law school, Mr. Knisely served as a law clerk to both the Honorable Reynaldo G. Mr. Hare is an associate of Osborne, Helman, Knebel & Scott, LLP.  He practices primarily in the area of estate planning and probate law.  His practice includes the representation of clients in complex estates, limited liability entities, and multifaceted wealth strategies.  In addition, he counsels clients with regards to their charitable objectives, including advising on the formation and management of private foundations.  Mr. Hare also represents clients in connection with probate procedures, trust and estate administration, and trust modifications.  This work includes supporting the firm’s litigators in contentious matters relating to trusts and estates.  Mr. Hare also assists in the representation of the firm’s cross-border clients, advising on tax, compliance and asset protection issues.
