Taylor Fields grew up in Georgia, but his family moved to Detroit (his father was a pilot for Northwest and then Delta) briefly when he was young before they ended up in Memphis.. He supplemented his bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Tennessee with a minor in philosophy. A philosopher he’s taken note of is Arthur Schopenhauer; Taylor is drawn to his concepts of will and consciousness.. Among his favorite authors are science writer Carl Sagan, horror-fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, science-fiction writers Thomas Ligotti and Gene Wolfe, and detective-story writer Raymond Chandler. Taylor and fellow attorney Jim Webb have been known to swap books and recommend authors to each other.. He’s also a big fan of Stanley Kubrick’s films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey and Full Metal Jacket. He enjoys bourbon and cigars (“Every once in a while”) while listening to ’70s bands, including Genesis and King Crimson.. He used to be a big home brewer of beer (“A whole lotta hops can cover many mistakes”) though his work at the firm has cut down on his time for that. He nonetheless brews up a batch now and again and has also made mead—fermented honey. He considers home brewing a generally solitary effort, but he looks upon enjoying it as a sport.. During and after law school, he did pro-bono legal work at a Memphis community legal center. He discovered that many of the clients there needed help with divorces, obviously a potentially expensive and often acrimonious undertaking. His work there led him to his current position with the firm.. Education and Experience. University of Memphis School of Law. I understand that your case involves the most important thing in your life--your family. I also understand that each case and each client are different.. My philosophy is that there is no "one size fits all" divorce. I work actively with my clients on all aspects of their cases. I know that working closely and communicating effectively with my clients ensures that I understand each client's unique goals. This allows for the best possible outcome for every individual client.. My approach is to avoid the expense and stress associated with litigation whenever possible, utilizing collaborative law and mediation when appropriate. This approach preserves family relationships, minimizes trauma to children, and saves tremendous amounts of money and time.. Unfortunately, sometimes settlement is not an appropriate option. In litigated matters, I rely on thorough trial preparation and aggressive advocacy to protect what matters most to each client, keeping in mind the client's goals and budget.. As a mediator, I assist both parties and their counsel (if represented) in settling their disputes themselves. I help both sides work together to attack the problem instead of each other. The successful result is a settlement that best meets the needs of each individual family. Avoiding litigation saves money and time, but more importantly, preserves important family relationships for the future.
