I did not start out as an estate planning attorney. Around 30 years ago, when I was practicing in the corporate section of Butler & Binion, a once major law firm in downtown Houston, I was recruited to join the firm's trust and estate section to assist business owners with their succession plans. The experience totally changed my understanding of the practice of law. I soon found that, as an estate planning attorney, I had a direct impact on how family members would relate to each other after a loved one becomes disabled or passes away. I loved the idea of being a family counselor, as well as an architect of an estate plan designed to protect assets and save money.. I left Butler & Binion in 1994 and joined with Tammy Manning in 1997 to form the law firm, Galligan & Manning. During the early years of Galligan & Manning, in addition to advising clients on estate planning matters, I worked with Tammy to help the firm's probate litigation clients find resolutions to the conflicts that often plague families after the death of a loved one.. One of the phrases I hear the most during an estate planning consultation is, "I just want everyone to get along after I'm gone." I have seen the triggers that can ignite a family conflict and result in heart wrenching and expensive litigation. This has helped me in my estate planning practice to show clients ways that conflict can be avoided or minimized after a loved one dies.. Whether it is working with a blended family, or with parents who want to protect their children from creditors or from losing their inheritance in a failed marriage, my greatest satisfaction comes when I hear a client say "I didn't know that was possible" or "I feel so empowered knowing that I can take steps now to keep peace in the future.". Many people think of estate planning as just focusing on an efficient transfer of assets from one generation to another, but to what end? I believe that my clients have as their purpose, not just the transfer of assets, but the desire to leave a legacy of love and family harmony.
I began my legal career in the management services division of a large, publicly-traded real estate investment trust. In this role I was responsible for the recruitment, hiring, evaluation, promotion and coaching of all employees reporting to me. As a member of the management team, I was driven to learn everything that I could about employment law to protect the company from liability. During this process I learned that many employment laws are so complex that they often provide no protection for employees at all. I wanted to do something to make sure that employees were treated fairly in our legal system. So, in 2006 I established the Dupree Law Firm with a valuable perspective on how companies approach employment law claims.. I am proud to have represented Texas employees for over a decade in cases before the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”), in state and federal court and in private arbitrations. I am confident that my unique background has produced favorable results for my clients. The best part of my job is helping employees who have traditionally been shut out of the legal system get the justice that they deserve.. I am a proud graduate of Florida State University where I completed both my undergraduate and law school education. I am licensed to practice law before state courts in Texas and before federal courts including the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the Northern District of Texas, the Eastern District of Texas and the United States Court of Appeal for the Fifth Circuit.. Outside the office I enjoy spending time with my wife, our two wonderful children and our feisty Miniature Schnauzer.
I am the founder and managing partner of the Padua Law Firm. I represent individuals and businesses, both domestic in the US and foreign clients, in both. I also serve as general counsel for clients, providing transactional, business/corporate law, as well as litigation advice and services.. Our firm was established in 2007 by Alejandro L. Padua with the mission to provide comprehensive advisory services to clients whose needs could not be met by a traditional law practice. We began building our practice one client at a time, focusing on specific areas in which we have significant legal, and in certain areas, business experience as well.. Our attorneys have solid educational foundations, with degrees from the University of Houston Law Center, The University of Texas Business and Law Schools, Harvard University, and NYU, and are continually being trained on cutting edge developments in the practice of law. Moreover, our attorneys have experience with prestigious past employers, including Skadden Arps, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, and Citigroup Energy.. The pedigree and experience of our attorneys ensure that clients obtain exceptional work product, meanwhile our core values and principles ensure the benefits of a dedicated advocate and intimate attorney-client relationship. Padua Law Firm continually strives for state of the art client service while maintaining the personal commitment and intimate knowledge of our clients’ matters.. In short, our firm is based upon the fundamental principle of providing our clients excellent legal service so that they can focus on the more enjoyable and profitable aspects of their life and business.
I am honored to accept referrals and confidential inquiries from private practitioners, corporate counsel, professionals, or executives who need advice, trial counsel, someone to lead an internal investigation, or to assist them with other corporate governance matters. I work closely with other counsel to ensure that clients are getting appropriate advice.. A little more about me and my beliefs. I'm also an author, leader, and a part-time academic. While I stay quite busy with my professional obligations, there is far more to life than being an attorney--which can be an all-consuming profession. I value time with my family and consider myself to be, more importantly, a loving husband, father, and a Christian. And, from having worked since my teens, I appreciate the importance of hard work and in taking pride in what I do.. So much is at stake when people hire a lawyer that nothing less than giving it your best is sufficient. That does not mean, however, that an attorney must be a jerk to be effective. Instead, being an effective advocate means caring about your client, being professional and courteous other lawyers, and with court personnel, and government officials.. I put myself through law school while working full time. Later in my career, when I reached a very advanced position at a young age within the federal government as a prosecutor, I felt I needed to put my skills and experience to their best use--which led me into private practice. Before doing so, however, I returned to law school and obtained an advanced degree (an LL.M. in Tax Law) while working full time.. I was recruited into a blue chip firm in Houston, and a friend convinced me to get another LL.M. (Health Law) to further hone my knowledge and skills in this arcane area of practice. After obtaining this third law degree, I have maintained my ties with academia by teaching as much as my time permits.. At bottom, I am a blessed individual. I have many good friends and colleagues, a wonderful family, and believe that I have been blessed with the God-given talent and strength to serve others effectively. I still have the passion and desire to excel and to leverage my skills to the best of my abilities.. As a Board-Certified Family Law attorney, my practice focuses on complex property and highly contentious custody cases across the State of Texas. I likewise have a wide range of experience relating to drafting unique/tailored divorce provisions in shareholder and other business entity agreements, including formulas for valuation of the corresponding entity, with "belt and suspenders" to premarital and/or post-marital agreements. I believe these types of agreements - premarital and post-marital agreements - create a form of "divorce insurance" - insuring and giving peace-of-mind not only to the client but also, when applicable, to the corresponding entity, new shareholders, or even investors from the instability that can often arise during a divorce.. I am Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and a frequent speaker and author. I have been recognized among Texas' Top Lawyers by Super Lawyers, including Top 50 Women in 2022. The Houston Business Journal also recognized me among Women Who Mean Business in 2021.. I am a natural competitor, stemming from my extensive soccer experience at the collegiate and National levels. I attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on a full athletic scholorship and played on the Women's Varsity Soccer Team for my four years at Wake Forest. I graduated in 2007 from Wake Forest with a B.A. in Spanish and Communication, and immediately began my legal careeer at Southern Methodist University (SMU) Dedman School of Law, graduating in 2010.. My goal is to empower my clients to become effective advocates for themselves and their families by providing dedicated, zealous and results-oriented representation before, during, and after litigation.
