In my second year of college I took a Civil Liberties course, studying the constitutional rights that make our country great. The course was taught by a lawyer, and it convinced me that I'd enjoy a career in law. After graduating from George Washington University Law School in 1981, I took a job at the Legal Aid Office in Syracuse, where I was a trial attorney for five years. I handled mostly criminal trials, with some general civil work. We were a busy office, helping thousands of clients and litigating cases regularly. I found it rewarding to be able to help others, and to advocate for causes I believed in. I felt that our good work went far in bettering the lives of those Syracuse residents most in need.. In 1986, my wife and I moved to Kingston, and I have been working at Ryan, Roach & Ryan ever since. I've continued to handle trial work and appeals. Much of my practice is now devoted to wills and probate, corporate matters and real estate. As much as ever, I still enjoy helping my clients navigate through their legal problems. I see myself as a problem solver who happens to be a lawyer. I still enjoy the challenge of working to understand a problem, then working to solve it. For me, patience is the key to understanding. The more I learn about a problem, the more confident I am about confronting it.. I am an active volunteer in our community. I was a member of the Board of Directors of the Ulster County Bar Association for ten years, ultimately serving as President in 1998-99. I continue to act as a volunteer judge for high school mock trial competitions. I coached CYO boys basketball and girls softball for many years for my children's teams. I enjoy bicycling, and regularly participate in cycling fundraisers.
